only to r hits while committing
fouren irs in their 4I-1 loss to the
Abilen Wylie Bulldogs last
Thursc iy in an Area baseball
plav-*f game at the Tarleton
State Iniversity campus in
Stephe ville.
"Ithi jght their pitcher (Grant
Gregg) kept us off stride ail
night," said West Coach Ed
Trochii . The kids seemed a
little u tight at first. After the

nings,! hought we played well."

right h nder Craig Hromadka
was 11 atched up against
Abilen s junior left-hander
Gregg. .
Desp x a walk to Hromadka
in the : -st inning, the Trojans
werefui ible to put anything on
the sco eboard. The Bulldogs
howeVe had their second bat-
ter rfltu i base on an error and
then !a< ranced to second on a
single b Gregg. Scott Unger then
reachet irst on a fielder's choice

and thi d with two outs, Mark
Powell len delivered an infield
singlea d the two runners scored
on an e ant throw to first base.
Hromai ta then struck out Ryan
White t end the inning.
Tr$i ng just 2-0, West tried
to clow the gap in the fourth
inning s Hromadka led off the
inning irith a smash which the
Bulldog third baseman made a
great play to snag and then fired
a high throw to first base, which
the Abilene first baseman made
a leaping snag of and then a
swipe tagofHromadka for a spec-
tacular out. Followinga strikeout
for the second out of the inning,
Keith Macik singled to right field
and Daniel Croll was hit by a
pitch to put Trojans on first and
second. Chad Marak then came
to the plate and hit a screaming
line drive which was speared by
the shortstop on another fine
defensive play to end the inning.
In the bottom of that inning,
the Abilene squad pushed across
two more runs. Todd Barnett
tripled to left centerfield to score
Greg McMinn and Marc
Deffenbaugh as the Bulldogs took
a 4-0 lead.
The Trojans started a scoring
rally in the top of the fifth with
Brian Laubert workingthe Bull-
dog pitcher for a walk. Matus
then singled to right field and
followinga strikeout, Matus was
forced out at second on a ground
ball hit by Tanner Holecek.
Hromadka then followed with a
single to right field, scoring
Laubert. A ground out to first
base for the final out of the in-
ning, kept West from scoringany
more runs in the inning.
The Trojans then had another
potential scoring threat in the
sixth inningasCroll walked with
one out and went to second when
Marak was hit by a pitch. Gregg
then struckout the next two West
batters to end the threat.

West Trojans stand at attention for the national anthem last Thursday prior to their Area
play-off game against the Abilene Wylie Bulldogs in Stephenville.
"I thought their pitcher
(Gregg) kept us off stride the
entire game. He changed speeds
so much and this was a change to
what we are used to seeing,”
Coach Trochim said. "He and the
Lake Dallas pitcher are prob-
ably the two best pitchers we
faced all year." He struck out 14
West batters in the game.
Hromadka also tossed a fine
game for West as he allowed only
two earned runs in the game
while striking out six and allow-
ing seven hits. "It's almost bad to
say, but we kind of take him for
granted. We know he is going to
pitch well and he battles them
(batters) every time," Coach
Trochim said.
The Trojans finished their
season with a 19-8 record and
captured their eighth straight
bi-idistrict championship in what
Coach Trochim thought would
be somewhat of a rebuildingyear.
With seven seniors on the team
and only three of those having
significant varsity playing time
prior to the season, "we knew we
had a nucleus, but it was a lot
better than I thought. That's a
tribute to the kids, they just got
better and better each game, es-
pecially toward the end of the
season."
For West the season could be
split into four parts. They started
out with a 1-3 record then reeled
off eight straight wins before
starting out the District 8-AAA
race with a 2-4 record. They then
finished up with seven straight
victories prior to their loss to
Abilene Wylie.
CATCHING FISH NEAR
STRUCTURE
Fish such as bass and
crappie like to live in, around
or near some form of
underwater structure.
Catching these fish, especially
when they are deeply buried in
the structure, can be difficult.
When fishing visible
structure or an underwater
object that you know is there,
make your first cast or two
away from the structure. Try
and entice the fish to leave his
habitat to bite your lure. If
you are unable to trigger a
strike away from the structure,
then cast a weedless lure, such
as a Texas rigged plastic worm
into the structure. If you feel
a strike, try and move the fish
on your initial hook set away
from the structure.
