School board to discuss tax rate, budget
The West Independent School District has scheduled a public
meeting for 6 p.m. Aug. 20 in the school district's administra-
tion building at 801 N. Reagan Street. The meeting is to
discuss the 2001-2002 budget and the proposed tax rate. The
regular monthly meeting is to follow at 6:15 p.m. Both meet-
ings are open to the public.
France liberators eligible for certificate
France is currently seeking American-Allied service members
who took part in the Normandy landing and contributed to the
country's liberation during World War II. This includes veter-
ans who served at France's sea or airspace. Applications for the
"Thank You Certificate" are available at the West VFW Post or
contact Robert Zahirniak at 826-3621.
More pictures needed for 'Wall of Honor"
The West Katy Depot and Veterans' "Wall of Honor" is still
accepting pictures of West and area Armed Forces members.
Items such as pre-World War II uniforms, W.W.II (Ike Jacket)
and post-W.W.II Army Green. Also a Marine regular and dress
uniform is needed. U.S. Flags are also needed to fly over the
Museum. The items may be dropped off at the depot between
9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on the weekdays.
West church plans fried chicken meal
The Bold Springs Baptist Church has scheduled a fried chicken
dinner at 11 a.m. this Friday in the church cafeteria. To place
orders to go, call 826-3225.
Library collecting egg shells
The West Public Library is collecting egg shells for their
confetti booth at Westfest. The shells may be brought to the
library or call 826-3070 and they will be picked up. The library
is to remain open during its regular hours after school starts
and the library will be closed on Sept. 1 due to Westfest.
Czech Heritage Society plans work day
The McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Society is scheduled to
meet at 2 p.m. this Saturday at Bobo Jaska's residence to work
on the group's Westfest float. The new Cookbook Publication
Committee is to meet at 1 p.m. Those planning to attend are
asked to wear work clothes. For further information, call Jaska
at 826-7191.
West Elementary School registration
Students new to the West Independent School District need to
register for school prior to today (Thursday). The elementary
school is to be registering students in kindergarten through
third grade. Parents need to bring copies of their child's birth
certificate, vaccine record, social security card and proof of
residency (utility bill). Students entering first through third
grade are also needing to bring a copy of their most recent
report card. The elementary school's office hours are from 8:30
a.m. - 3 p.m. For more information, call 826-7540.
1976 WHS grads needing addresses
The 1976 West High School graduates are planning their 25
year reunion for Sept. 15. The grads are needing the addresses
for: Gene Gassaway, Ricky Gill, Jeff Goetsch, Flora Martinez,
Diane Kruse Prince, Mark Sullivan and Judy Pickens Uptmor.
Anyone with information on these grads is asked to call
Bernice Sawyer at 829-2358 or Paula Cernosek at 826-7380.
Another planning meeting is set for 2 p.m. this Sunday at West
KC Hall.
1980 Trojan Football team reunion
The 1980 West High School has scheduled a reunion on the
weekend of Sept. 28-29. All players, coaches, trainers, physi-
cians and their spouses or dates are to meet at Trojan Field on
Friday night (Sept. 28) and are to sit in a designated area in the
stadium. On Sept. 29, all players, coaches, trainers and physi-
cians are to meet at the high school at 12:30 p.m. for a photo.
Also that day, the above plus cheerleaders, Spirit Sisters and
their families are invited for a swimming social from 2-6 p.m.
at the home of Jerry and Sharon Mazanec at 1006 S. Marable
in West. Food and drinks are to be provided, however dona-
tions to offset the cost will be appreciated. RSVP by Sept. 8 at
826-7094.
West garden club to meet Thursday
The West Bluebell Garden Club has scheduled a meeting at 9
a.m. today (Thursday) in the West Public Library. The group
is to tour the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco. Admission is $4
per person and visitors are welcome to attend.
Westfest Parade entry forms available
Entry forms for this year's Westfest Parade are currently
available. The parade is planned for 10 a.m. Sept. 1. Those
wishing to enter may get their entry forms at Old Corner Drug
or call Parade chairman Carla Payne at 826-5122 or 826-5450.
Those wishing to enter the bicycle decoration portion of the
parade may pick up their entry forms at any of the West schools
or Old Corner Drug.
1956 WHS grads planning reunion
The 1956 West High School graduates have scheduled the 45th
Class Reunion from 6-11 p.m. Sept. 29 in the West Community
Center. A light meal is to be served. Those planning to attend
are asked to bring pictures and memorabilia and come to visit
with their classmates. Current addresses for the following
classmates are still needed: Mary Alamanza, Alvin Beasley,
Richard Berger, Wilma Spence, Mary Ann Knight, Evelyn
Urban and Robert Altus. West High School faculty members
from the 1952-56 school years are invited to attend. For further

Bus trip to Bossier City
A bus trip to the Isle of Capri in Bossier City, Louisiana is
planning to leave at 6:30 p.m. this Friday and return at noon

getting ready
for first class day
Summer vacation time for West youngsters is quickly coming to
an end with the beginning of the 2001-2002 school year starting next
week.
Various school officials announced this week the schedule for the
first class day.
West Elementary School students are scheduled to report to their
assigned home rooms at 8 a.m. on that first day, according to the
school's principal Phil Gerik. The buses are to run at 3:10 p.m. that
day as well as throughout the year.
Gerik estimates approximately 400 students are to attend classes
in the pre-kindergarten though third grades at the school located at
209 N. Harrison. Any student not already registered at the school,
but planning to attend, is asked to register at the school as soon as
possible.
The West Intermediate School, located at 1212 North Reagan
Street, is scheduled to begin classes at 8 a.m. that opening day.
Students in grades four and five planning to attend this school are
asked to go directly to the homeroom class that day. Approximately
182 students are expected to attend the school this year.
On the second day of school, students are asked to enter the
building through the gym doors facing the track field. The doors are
to be open at 7:30 a.m. The school's hours are from 8 a.m. - 3:20 p.m.
Approximately 328 students are expected to attend classes the
first day at West Middle School located at 406 W. Shook St. West
Middle School principal Harvey Siems said the school's sixth,
seventh and eighth grade students are to report at 8 a.m. in the main
gym for assemble that day. The students are then to be divided into
their advisory periods. School is to dismiss at 3:15 p.m.
High School students numbering approximately 560 are ex-
pected to attend classes that first day at the West High School
campus located at 1008 Jerry Mashek Drive.
High school principal Dean Blair said the bell will ring at 7:55
a.m. that first day with classes starting promptly at 8 a.m. Students

Entry forms available for Westfest contests
Parade of Costumes area seeking 3-6 year olds for Sept 1 event
Westfest is less than three
weeks away and entry forms are
currently available for both the
Kolache Baking Contest and
Tarock Tournament at this year's
festival along with applications
available for a new segment of
the festival's Parade of Costumes.
JoAnn Nors said this year's
Parade of Costumes is planned
from 2-2:30 p.m. Sept. 1 (Satur-
day) in the Westfest Amphithe-
ater as part ofthe festival's multi-
cultural entertainment. This
year the group is seeking 3-6
year olds to join in the Parade of
Costumes.
"This is the first time we are
trying to get any that young,"
she said while adding the hope is
to promote interest in Czech
Heritage among area youth and
get more involved in the festival.
Parents of boys or girls, ages
3-6, interested in participating
in the parade of costumes are
asked to contact JoAnn's Bridals
at 826-5715 or Flowers 'N* Things
at 826-3151. The deadline for
registering is Aug. 25.
Kolache Baking Contest
This is the fourteenth year
for the Kolache Baking Contest
at the Westfest and contest co-
chairmen Marcella Sinkule and
Mildred Dokupil invite area resi-
dents to enter this contest set for
Sunday (Sept. 2).
As in past years, this contest
is open to both professional and
non-professional bakers. Non-
professionals are those individu-
als who have not been employed
in a bakery at any time in the
last 12 months and those who
have not received more than $ 100
in gross sales from kolaches sold
through their home or by any
other means during this same
period.
Kolaches must be made of a
scratch yeast dough and the en-
tries must consist of six average
size kolaches of the same filling
on a disposable tray or plate.
Registration is scheduled from
11:30 a.m. -12:15 p.m. on Sept. 2
in the entertainers' lounge at the
festival grounds. Judging is to
begin at 1 p.m. that day and
winners are to be announced at 4
p.m. in the West Longhorn Club
building. The winners must be
present at this event. The kolache
entries are to be accepted up to
12:15 p.m. the day ofthe contest
and the co-chairmen said a com-
pleted entry form will allow the
entrants free admittance into the
festival grounds that day.
Only kolaches are to be ac-
cepted for judging. Tea rings,
strudels and other forms of baked
goods are not accepted. The
kolaches must be made by one
person and no team entries will
be allowed. Contestants may only
have two entries per class.
There is no entry fee for this
contest and entry forms can be
obtained at either West Bank
and Trust, State National Bank
or by calling Mrs. Sinkule at 254-

Taroky Tourney
The Taroky Tournament is
scheduled for the twelfth con-
secutive year at the festival on
Sept. 1 (Westfest Saturday) in
the West Community Center
near the festival grounds.
The entry fee is $17.50 per
person with registration from 8-
8:45 a.m. with the tourney be-
ginning at 9 a.m. This tourney is
open to all interested players, 18
years of age or older.
Kolaches and coffee are to be
served during registration and
lunch is included in the registra-
tion fee and is to be served in the
Community Center. Trophies
and cash prizes are to be awarded
to the top four players and play is
to continue for all players
throughout the tourney. The top
four players after five rounds are
to be awarded first, second, third
and fourth place honors.

Hand and his band faded into
the warm summer air last Sat-
urday night putting to an end
another successful running of the
55th Annual West Champion-
ship Rodeo.
"Saturday's crowd was near
capacity," Juanita Cook, West
Fair and Rodeo Association sec-
retary-treasurer, said Tuesday
and "those attending the dance
(following the rodeo) had a great
time."
Saturday's performance
capped off three straight nights
for the event as rodeo fans wit-
nessed approximately 300 cow-
boys and cowgirls competing in
the various events.
