Penelope One Act Play
plans May 7 performance
The West News - Thursday, May 2,2002
The Penelope One Act Play
"You Can’t Take It With You”
will be performed in the Penelope
ISDCafeteria May 7at 7:30P.M.
Penelope competed at
Regionals at Stephen F. Austin
University, Nacagoches.
The characters receiving
awards at Regionals were Ashley
Adams, all star cast and Joe
Harlin, honorable mention.
Other members of the cast are
DeAnna Beseda, Martin Dudik,
Audra Osborne, Keri Wright,
C.J. Glatter, Mario Herrera,
Adam Dudik, Tanner Svacina,
Jason Atkins, Tiffany Svacina,
Michael Kasberg, Natalie
Matula, Jennifer Hicks. Crew
members are Billie Joe Garcia,
Sound Director; Samantha
Machac, Light Director; Cassidy
Sherman, Stage Manager; David
Machac, Crew Member; Alter-
nate, Tori Moss. The director is
Gloria Walton.
The play takes place in the
late 1930s in the home of Martin
Vanderhof (grandpa), Joe
Harlin. At first the Sycamores,
Grandpa's daughter and family,
(Ashley Adams (Penny) C.J.
Glatter (Paul) seem mad, but it
is not long before we realize that
if they are mad, the rest of the
world is madder.
In contrast to these delight-
ful people are the unhappy
Kirbys- (Michael Kasberg (Mr.
Kirby), Natalie Matula (Mrs.
Kirby). The plot shows how Tony
(Jason Atkins), attractive young
son of the Kirbys, falls in love
with Alice Sycamore (Keri
Wright) and brings his parents
to dine at the Sycamore home on
the wrong evening. The shock
sustained by the Kirbys who are
invited to eat cheap food, shows
Alice that marriage with Tony is
out of the question. The Sy-
camores, however, thought sym-
pathetic to Alice, find it hard to
realize her point of view. Mean-
time, Tony who knows the Sy-
camores are right and his own
people wrong will not give her
up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is
converted to the happy madness
of the Sycamores, particularly
since he happens in during a
visit by an ex-Grand Duchess
(Jennifer Hicks), earningher liv-
ing as a waitress.
No mention has as yet been
made of the strange activities of
certain members of the house-
hold engaged in the manufac-
ture of fireworks; nor of the print-
ing press set up in the parlor. Ed
(Adams Dudik) nor of Rheba
(Audra Osborne) the maid and
her friend Donald (Tanner
Svacina), not of Grandpa's in-
terview with the tax collector
when he tells him he doesn't
believe in income tax.
Essie (DeAnna Beseda) takes
ballet lessons from a Russian
ballet teacher Kolenkhov (Mario
Herrera) and Penny (Ashley
Adams) writes plays and paints
pictures of Mr. DePinna (Mar-
tin Dudik) in a Roman Toga.
The public is invited to sup-
port Penelope's One Act Play
and enjoy this delightful com-
edy. Admission will be $2 for
students and $3 for adults.
