Hospital authority officials wanting input on proposed medical district
Survival of the Hillcrest Medi-
cal Center in West is the sched-
uled topic for discussion at two
town hall meetings in West later
this month.
The West Hospital Authority
is sponsoring the meetings
planned from 7-9 p.m. April 11
and 18 in the West High School
Auditorium.
Michael D. Williams, presi-
dent and CEO of VHASW Com-
munity Health Corporation in
Dallas, is scheduled to present
this informational program. "He
will discuss the various aspects
of health care issues which are
revelant to communities our size
in a rural setting," David Pareya,
West Hospital Authority presi-
dent, said Monday.
"He is well-versed in commu-
nity hospitals and how they have
chosen to survive," Pareya said.
"Many have survived as a result
of a taxing district," such as been
proposed in the West Indepen-
dent School District to aid the
West hospital facility.
Just last month (March 22),
the West Hospital Authority sub-
mitted a bill to State Represen-
tative Jim Dunham and State
Senator David Sibley which
would give the hospital author-
ity the ability to schedule an elec-
tion to create a taxing entity
called the West Medical District.
"We (hospital authority) feel it is
our obiligation to seek all pos-
sible avenues to maintain qual-
ity health care in our commu-
nity," Pareya said. "This is the
last resort available to us."
Earlier this month Hillcrest
Health Systems, which has the
West hospital facility leased
Eliska Beaty (left) and Holly Sprink (center) of the Marketing Department at Hillcrest Health Systems meet with Melissa
Warren, administrative assistant of the West Hospital Authority about plans for meetings to discuss the future of the West
hospital and an upcoming mailout to West ISD voters.
through May 1,2002, announced input from the meetings and an
that it was losing money at the
West hospital and there were
financial troubles. The hospital
authority and Hillcrest are now
exploring ways to continue to
provide health care for the area.
At the meetings, Pareya said
West ISD residents will be given
i nformation concerning the West
hospital along with the property
tax implications of the proposed
West Medical District on West
ISD taxpayers.
It is the hospital authority's
hope that it will receive enough
informal poll to decide if they
wish to go ahead with the elec-
tion or not.
In addition to taking an infor-
mal poll of those at the meeting,
the hospital authority is plan-
ning to send letters to' all 4,400
registered voters in the West
school district later this week to
inform them of the meeting.
Along with the letter will be a
post card which will ask the resi-
dents to vote whether or not they
are in favor of the creation of a
West Medical District. "This (in-
formal poll) will let us know if we
should go ahead with the pro-
posed election. We need as much
feedback as possible," Pareya
said.
The hospital authority presi-
dent said they hope to get the
information returned from the
poll by April 19. The hospital
authority has a special called
board meeting for 6:30 p.m. April
19 to review the information from
the poll and make a decision con-
cerning the West Medical Dis-
trict election.
