Helen Kocian
Helen Kocian has been se-
lected as the volunteer of the
month for April. Helen joined
the West Volunteer Ambulance
Association last summer, upon
completion of the Emergency
Medical Technician Basic Class.
When I spoke with Helen to
ask her why she became an EMT,
her response was so heart-warm-
ing and kind. Helen said, "I was
blessed with a beautiful family
and God has watched over us
and taken care of us, now I want
to help take care of others who
many be sick or lonely or scared."
It was so hard trying to inter-
view Helen for this article be-
cause she wouldn't talk about
herself. I guess she didn't want
to take credit for all she's done.
Instead, she credited the men
and women who have worked so
hard for the community of West
and to help get the new building.
Helen is one of the women
who has dedicated so much to all
of us. Helen works at State Na-
tional Bank. She tirelessly de-
votes her time to help at the
ambulance fund-raisers and also
on the ambulance itself. In talk-
ing with Helen, I was told that at
one time she volunteered at
Hillcrest Baptist Medical Cen-
ter in Waco in the Neonatal Unit
for premature babies. Years ago
she also volunteered to drive resi-
dents of West Rest Haven to
beauty appointments and to play
bingo.
Helen is one of the most mod-
est women I have ever had the
pleasure of meeting. Helen, we
are very lucky to have you as a
part of the EMS family. It takes
your support to help keep us
afloat.

90th birthday
Lillian Bell
Lillian Bell celebrated her
90th birthday on May 3. She was
honored with a surprise party
and dinner at Cottonwood Hall
on May 1, given by her children
and grandchildren.
Approximately 100 people at-
tended.
Lillian would like to thank all
her family and friends that at-
tended and for all the wonderful
gifts.
When the water temperature reaches 70 degrees, the beach is
filled bikini and bathing suit clad swimmers. What they don't know
is that when the water heats up, sharks find their way to the beach
too. In reality, they pose little anger to swimmers, but the idea of
swimming with a 10 foot long tiger shark understandably doesn't sit
well with anyone.
Texans are fast learning that shark fishing is exciting stuff and
that it doesn’t take a lot of fancy equipment to do it. Just grab a surf
rod, a spool of heaVy line and some cut bait and take off for your
favorite beach or fishing pier. Sharks are not real particular about
what they eat.
A real man-eater, the bull shark is one of the most common species
to the Texas surf. Bull sharks can reach up to 12 feet in length and
are known for their line-busting fights. Bulls are very aggressive and
must be handled carefully. It is best to release this species as their
meat is not considered edible.
Hammheads are also common. In early Spring the large female
scalloped hammerheads will visit the surf and can be caught fairly
easily. Lemon shark, tiger and sandbar shark also frequent the surf
and, by the way, are all potential maneaters.
The blacktip shark is the most sought after species in Texas
waters and for good reason. Blacktips are very common to the surf,
put up a spectacular fight and have a fine flavored flesh. Shark meat
is excellent, especially blacktip shark, but it must be prepared right.
Over one-third of a shark's weight is it's liver and this organ must be
removed as soon as possible. If the fish dies and is not dressed within
a few minutes, the liver will excrete a foul flavor and can spoil the
meat.
Sharks get a bad image and have been neglected as a game
species. That is changing now as anglers are seeing that these
predators of the deep are worthy of our attention.
