Good addressing is
good delivery insurance
By Freddie Kaluza
Postmaster, West, TX
"Postal employees are often asked
by customers how best to address
their letters and parcels for mailing,"
says West Postmaster Freddie
Kaluza.
"When a letter or package is re-
turned because of a bad or insufficient
address," Kaluza continues, "no one
is happy.”
All mail needs a delivery address
and should have a return address.
"With the Postal Service moving to
automation to process the mail," says
Kaluza, "it is important that proper
and correct addresses be used by our
customers."
The following sequence is recom-
mednded for addressing your mail:
Name of Recipient
Delivery Address
Post Office, State, Zip
The delivery address should be the
recipient's street address, post office
box number, or rural route number
and box number. If the mail is for a
multi-unit complex or apartment
building, place the room or apartment
number to the right of the street ad-
dress.
"The same information as it per-
tains to the sender should be included
in the return address," explained
Kaluza.
You will get the best possible serv-
ice if you capitalize everything in the
address. Use common abbreviations
found in the National Five-Digit Zip
Code and Post Office Directory avail-
able in post office lobbies. It would
help if you eliminate all punctuation,
use the two-letter state abbreviations
and the ZIP codes. "When both a post
office box number and strep' •■iddress
are used," says Kaluza, "make sure
the place where you want the mail
delivered appears on the line immedi-
ately above the city, stale and ZIP
Code line. Proper addressing is just
good delivery insurance.”
