DECA Winners Named
Gholson News
by Louise Wagoner
Kiwanis News
by Milton C. Morgan
Thirty-nine Kiwanians heard
Weldon Baker of Hillsboro as
Weldon spoke about drugs and
a personal experience from the
past.
Our guests were: Eric Hooker
and David Hodges. David is a
candidate for County Court-at-
Law. Two Key Club members
present were seniors Jim Bob
Sandifer and Greg Hutyra.
After our song and pledge by
Al Payne, Lester Boortz led us
in prayer. Announcements
made were by Tommy Muska
who reminded us of the
upcoming Chamber of Com-
merce banquet to be held April
6. President Jerry Hugo asked
for Kiwanians to sign up for the
Texas - Oklahoma governor’s
banquet which will be March 17
in Corsicana.
Our program was presented
by Weldon Baker, who talked
on drugs; a talk which was
based on facts and a personal
experience. When you partici-
pate in drugs, it’s usually
because you feel unwanted, you
cop out; and curiosity and peer
pressure are also factors.
Drugs tend to relieve the
pressure but only temporarily.
According to Mr. Baker, “The
mind and body are engaged in
war.” When this happens, you
usually end up in an institution,
prison or treatment center.
Drug abuse has been a
problem for many years and
leads to a life of crime. The
public sees and hears only the
bad side as it is an illness that
affects people of all kinds.
The drug habit is very
expensive, therefore, a drug
addict will rob, steal or even
kill.
Mr. Baker is now a rehabili-
tated person and travels around
the Central Texas area to talk to
people about both sides of drug
addiction.
In conclusion, Mr. Baker
stated that “the drug addict
is ‘stigmatized’ by society...
There is a need to get back to
basics and come together and
talk in order to protect our
youth and our nation.”
Edwin Nors won the door
prize.

leum Marketing event.

duties,” "mass mathematical
problem solving,” and “verbal
discussion of a business
problem."

in her category and Rusty
Slovak also took a first. Marile
and Rusty are eligible to attend
state contests in Corpus Christi
April 22-25.
