West VFW Post 4819 to elect officers
The West VFW Post 4819 will have elections of officers at its
next regular scheduled meeting at 8 p.m. April 26 at the
VFW Club. Positions to be filled are those of Commander,
Senior Vice Commander, Junior Vice Commander, Quarter-
master, Judge Advocate, Chaplin, Trustees and Directors. It
is important that all members of the Post attend this meet-
ing and vote.
Abbott VFD dinner this Sunday
The Abbott Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual
dinner this Sunday in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catho-
lic Church parish hall in Abbott. The meal will consist of
fried chicken, sausage with all the trimmings. Serving is to
start at 11 a.m. with adult plates and plates-to-go priced at
$5 and children (under age 12) plates at $3.50 each. There
will be a raffle with 14 items and 50/50. All local ladies are
asked to bring a dessert.
Longhorn Club planning Trail Ride
The West Longhorn Club will have a trail ride this Sunday.
Riders are to the West Rodeo grounds at 1 p.m. with a meal
to be served after the trail ride. Club members planning to
attend are asked to contact David Filer at 829-2546 or Larry
Mynarcik at 829-2241.
Bluebell Garden Club to meet today
The Bluebell Garden Club is scheduled to tour Bonnies
Garden today (Thursday). Members are to meet at 8:45 a.m.
in the West Community Center to car pool to the drive to
Bonnie's. After the tour, the club members will have lunch
at Luby's Cafeteria.
Senior Dance Club plans dance
The West Senior Dance Club is having its regular monthly
dance from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. this Friday in the West Commu-
nity Center. The dance is for seniors age 50 and over.
Admission is $2.50 each with music by the "Moonlighters."
Swimming lessons at MCC
Sign-ups for Operation Waterproof at McLennan Commu-
nity College are to continue through April 28. The swimming
lessons are for kindergarten through fifth grade students
sign-ups are available in the school offices. The cost is $29 for
the lessons and $6 for the bus transportation. The lessons
are limited to the first 60 students sign up. The lessons are
for two weeks from 10:15 a.m. -12:15 p.m. Monday through
Thursday beginning May 30. For further information, con-
tact Jean Smith at 826-5655.
Gholson groups to meet Sunday
The Gholson Cemetery Association and Gholson Historical
Society have scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. this Sunday at
the Gholson School Lunchroom and Library. On display will
be "Arts for the People" Texas Post Office Murals of the New
Deal Exhibit. The arts exhibit may be viewed during school
hours from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. through April 28. The public is
invited to attend.
KJT District Fishing Contest
The KJT District V Fishing Contest and Family Day, hosted
by Dallas Society 111, is planned for April 23 at the Randal-
Davis place in Ennis. Those wishing to go are asked to meet
that day before 11 a.m. this Sunday at West Fraternal
Auditorium. For more information, call Ernest Sykora at
826-3375 or Robert Nors at 826-3451.
Baseball sign-ups for 15-16 year olds
Fifteen and 16-year-old boys interested in playing summer
baseball in West are asked to contact either Barrett Ivy at
829-1901 or Harry Marak at 826-3154.
Sixth grade pre-registration
West Middle School has scheduled Bixth grade pre-registra-
tion and orientation starting at 7 p.m. April 27 in the middle
school gym. This pre-registration is open to any current fifth
grade student planning to attend the West Middle School
next school year.
1965 West grads schedule meeting
The 1965 West High School grads have scheduled a reunion
for 7:30 p.m. April 24 at Richard Urbanovsky's house at 612
N. Marable.
All Sports Banquet April 24
The West Athletic Booster Club is currently selling tickets
for the Annual Trojan and Lady Trojan All Sports Banquet
set fix- 7 p.m. April 24 in the West High School Cafetorium.
Tickets are available at State National Bank and West Bank
and Trust at a cost of $5 each. The deadline for purchasing
tickets is noon April 24.

The deadline for signing up to play for Junior f
(ages 13-15) teams in West is 8:30 a.m. this Saturday.
Anyone wishing to play on the West girls teams is asked to

will be at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday at the West Youth Baseball
-Softball complex.

Penelope play advances to rigionals
Penelope High School is
to participate in Regional
One Act Play competition
this Saturday at Kilgore Col-
lege in Kilgore. The competi-
tion is set to begin at noon
with Penelope scheduled to
be the third school to per-
form.
Penelope qualified for
regionals after being chosen
as one of the top schools at
Area competition earlier at
Hill College in Hillsboro. The
school's cast performs the
play "The Foreigner" and is di-
rected by Gloria Walton and
Keith Hardy.

The West Independent School
District Board of Trustees ap-
proved additional teaching posi-
tions on the district campuses
for next school year during their
April 12 meeting.
Following a presentation by
the principals, the board ap-
proved hiringtwo addition teach-
ers at West High School and two
at West Elementary School for
the 1995-96 school year.
The two additional teacher
positions at the high school are
for a combination English and
Science instructor and a combi-
nation girls head basketball
coach and health and physical
education teacher. Also two
teachingpositions are to be added
at West Elementary School.
The trustees voted to re-em-
ploy teacher and coach Chase
Mann at high school and Dan

Early voting
in elections
underway
Early voting began Monday in local city and school district races
with the general election date set for May 6.
In the West city election, Mayor William F. (Boiley) Pareya is
being contested for this position by current City Councilman Russ
Willsey.
In another city race, three candidates are vying for two council
positions. The candidates are incumbent Ed Klish, Sondra (Sandy)
Hutyra and Tom Sandifer. Each position is a two year term.
Early voting by personal appearance continues through May 2. In
the city election, these wishing to vote early can do so in the City
Secretary's Office at West City Hall during the hours of 8 a.m. - 5
p.m. Monday through Friday.
In the West Independent School District board of trustees elec-
tion there are four candidates vying for three positions. Incumbents
Edwin Nors and Larry Mynarcik are seeking re-election with Jack
Church and Ronnie Sykora also vying for positions on the school
board. Early voting is also continuing through May 2. The early
voting is being conducted during the weekday hours of 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
in the West ISD Administration Building at 801N. Reagan.
In the Leroy City Election, three candidates are vying for Snokhous
and David Williams are seeking election the city council as is
Bradley (Brad) Pu tchat. These council positions are two year terms.
The City of Ross will have its election on May 6 with early voting
ending May 2. Richard Vavra, Billy Willis and Joe Roberts have filed
for the three Aldermen positions on the ballot. KP. Bryant will be
the election judge. Any Ross citizen wishing to vote early should
contact the election judge.

The West Baseball - Softball League has scheduled opening
ceremonies for 10 a.m. this Saturday at the baseball and softball
complex in West.

The West Police Department
investigated eight incidents dur-
ing the past week in the city.
Three windows were reported
shot out of the school building on
the West Middle School campus.
Police found BB's at the scene of
the crime and believe the win-
dows were shot with an air rifle.
This was reported at 11:55 a.m.
April 14.
Later that day at 9:10 p.m.,
the police investigated a prowler
call at a residence in the 1400
block of N. Reagan St. When the
doorbell rang at the residence,
the owner went to the door and
witnessed a young, white male
standingoutside. Theyoungper-
son ran toward the street. A
threatening note was then found
on the door saying they were
going to kill him and his family.
Police also investigated an

tially given the West ISD super-

West ISD officials have not

property which they are trying
to purchase.
The trustees also decided that
next school year, there will be
one full time English as a Second
Language (ESL) teacher and
another to work part time (one-
fourth of the time) in the school
district.

their vehicle skidded out of con-
trol on a slick road and across
FM Road 2311 into a ditch. The
truck received front end damage
and the two people reportedly
received minor ii\juries.
A two vehicle accident oc-
curred at 3 p.m. April 14 at 100
E. Oak. Another two vehicle ac-
cident occurred in front of
Strickly Country on South Main
Street. There was damage to both
vehicles and there were no iqju-
ries.

active in the community, serv-
ing on the West Volunteer Fire

cil for the past three years.
He has been involved in help-
ing the city to obtain grants for
the West Public Library

West resident Ronnie Sykora is a candidate in the West Indepen-
dent School District Trustee Election set for May 6.

advantage of the many extra curricular activities at the school in
addition to the excellent educational background I received. This
education was a great aid throughout my years in college and also
