All-Star selection better this year
By John Pescaia
Unlike last season. fans have had a little more sense in picking the All-Stars
to play next Tuesday evening in San Diego. 1 can not remember when some
positions have been won in landslides like this year.
Let us start at the catcher position, (my only gripe on the starting American
League team.) Why would anyone pick Sandy Alomar Jr. of Cleveland over
Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez? Look at the statistics. First, Alomar plays for
Cleveland which gives new meaning to last place. The last time the Indians had
a good team, Eisenhower was president. Alomar is also batting only .239 and
hit two home runs and has driven in 20 runs. Benito Santiago, the starting
catcher for the National League had no competition and he is truly the cream
of the crop in the league.
First Base is a tough pick as 1 see so many great ones. In the American
League, Mark McGwire finished first, but some other great ones are Frank
Thomas, Cecil Fielder, Rafael Palmeiro, Don Mattingly, and Kent Hrbek. The
National League was close as Fred McGriff of San Diego edged Will Clark by
15,000 votes to get the starting nod.
The American League has the crop of the second basemen with four players
who could play on the team. The starter will be Roberto Alomar of Toronto,
but some other candidates for back-up duties could be Chuck Knoblauch, Steve
Sax, and Julio Franco. In the National League, Ryne Sandberg will be the
starter. He should be since he is making seven million dollars a season.
Shortstop was no contest as Cal Ripken Jr. of Baltimore won by over 2
million votes ahead of his nearest competitor, Manny Lee, of Toronto. In the
National League, Ozzie Smith will be going to the All-Star game for his tenth
time. Some other noteworthy candidates in the National Lague are Tony
Fernandez, Barry Larkin, and Jay Bell.
An All-Star game would not be the same at third base if Wade Boggs of
Boston was not involved. So that is probably why he will be the starter next
Tuesday nighL In the National League,Terry Pendleton of Atlanta won aclose
decision over prominent newcomer Gary Sheffield. Chris Sabo, Matt Wil-
liams, and Steve Buechele are other worthy All-Stars.
The outfielders presented a tough selection for fans but one name is not hard
to choose. Kirby Puckett is batting .345 this season and has helped lead the
Twins to first place in the division. Listen to the other top ten names in the
outfield and try to deny them from going to this spectacular game. Ken Griffey,
Jr., Jose Canseco, Dave Winfield, Joe Carter, Rickey Henderson, Ruben Sierra,
Brady Anderson, Juan Gonzalez, and Shane Mack. The National league has its
stars and they have Barry Bonds, Tony Gwynn, Andy Van Slyke, Bobby
Bonilla, Daryl Strawberry, David Justice, Ron Gant, Andre Dawson, Len
Dykstra, and Felix Jose.
One thing for sure, the All-Star game is loaded with historic moments and
this year should provide some more great moments for baseball stars in the
