THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 1930
HUGE LOSS FROM
FIRE CONTINUES
Should the fire losses for Janu-
iry be repeated each month through
lie year, the total loss in 1930
would be over a half billion dol-
lars! Put to constructive use this
i nortnous sum would build a road
p00 miles long at a cost of 825,000
Is mile, with sufficient left to de-
Jveiop 100-foot lots on both sides
and provide for each lot a bouse
costing 87,000, furniture costing
8 >,000, a 81,000 garage and a 81,000
ear.
Fortunately January is often lhe
worst month of the year for fire
losses. Also the 842.344,036 re-
ported by The National Board of
Fire 'Underwriters for January,
1030, Is five per cent less than for
’be same month In 1929. As a mat
vtr Of fact; losses have decreased
•lightly each yearfrom 8561,980,751
in 1926 to 8422.215,128 In 1929, bu!
■’ven the latter figure Is many times
too large. It represents property
values that have gone up in smoke
and the destruction of raw mater
ials that can never be replaced.

Friday evening, March 7, proved
to be a red letter date for the
Junior Class of 1930. On this date
the annual Junior Play was pre-
sented to the public by a very cap-
able cast.
The play was a decided success,
and exhibited some very fine tal-
ent. When the first scene opened,
the audience started laughing and
the mirth did not cease until the
final, curtain was drawn.
The presentation, “Be An Opti-
mist,” was selected, and coached
by Frances Huggins, the Junior’s
-sponsor, and the cast was com
posed of members of the class.
Waldo Haiqiey was very good as the
Yiddish propritor of an “antique”
shop. He kept the audience laugh-
ing with his comedy and Jewish
accent. “Dilly*- Gerties was very
natural as the sarcastic “other boy.1
Adele Dodson showed very fine act-
ing as Mildred Clinton, the “pur-
sued” girl. Dallas Russell drew
the sympathy of the audience with
his perfect imitation of the Egyp-
tian mummy, and excited the aud-
ience’s admiration with his very
fine acting as the hero of the play.
The remainder of the capable cast
was: Becky Goldish, Marie Gay;
Pietro, Nathan Perkins; Mrs. Clin-
ton, Ruth Bell-; Mike, John Vermil-j^
lion; Miss Hull, Bernice: Cannon;
Maggie, Thelma Sharp; Ethel, Vir-

During the time that Charles P.
Taft headed the famous ranch prop-
erties that bore his. name, William
.Howard Taft,'his half-brother, who
was then, president of the United
States, visited in this sCctlon. This
was the first and only time for a
president-of the United States to
visit South Texas. -

moved the first house off the Taft
ranch properties near Gregory to
Muscatal Crossing, which is now
Toft.
Mr. Taft visited Corpus Christ!
in 1909 while president. He had
gone (o La Quinta, ranch home of
harjes .P. Taft, on the Coleman-
Fulton division of the Taft radch,
located near Gregory.
Corpus Christians, according to
Eli, T. Merriman, formerly editor
of the Corpus Christl Caller, who
reported Air. Taft’s visit to this city
decided to invite Mr. Taft to come
over.
"The invitation was extended- and
accepted in due time. ..Citizens here
made arrangements through John
Garner, congressman, to have the
United State .revenue cutter, Win-
dom, to come into Corpus Christ!
bay for entertainment of the presi-
dent.
The cutter docked near where the
municipal pier now is, but -could
not get closer to,-shore because of
draft of more than 18 feet of
thousands of residents ia thta sec-
tion had either seen or heard a
president. Of course, this was be-
fore the introduction of taking pic-
tUrSs. It is annnised that the- visi-
tors to the city to see Mr. Taft were
to his liking.
That influence at that time was
being brought to bear in Washihg-

tablishing a deep water port at
Corpus Christ! was illustrated ia
the fact that when Mr. Taft sphke
in Spohn park, the main subject of
his talk was deep water for Corpus
Christi. He was introduced by Dan
Reid, then mayor of the city.
After conclusion of the ceremon-
ies at Spohn parjf, Mr. Taft was
taken to the old King mansion oh
the bluff and entertained at a dto-
ner party at which R. J, Kleberg
was host.
An amusing incident in this con-
nection was the fact that Mr. Kler
berg was a devout democrat and
Mr. Taft was an ardent republican.
Some,; years later, when William
Jennings Bryan, fiery democratic
aspirant for the presidency several
times, spoke here at Artesian park,
he was entertained by the late Dr.
