This means a great deal to the boys |
and girls of America for two reasons:,
In the first place, we should think of
oursel ves as citizens because in .a few j
years We will own the property a nd I
be paying the taxes of the. nation. I
Second, as children we can perform a '!
wonderful service in saving homes and
neighborhoods from much of this lossy
Carelessness is the greatest cause I
for so much fire loss. If the people
would only assist, the most serious
cause of fires could be removed - -that I
is carelessness. We as a whole are
very careless people. Carelessness is
a great national sin, therefore it is •
nothing to be proild of. Carelessness
burns our towns, leads people to risk
their lives at rail road crossings, and
takes chances with health. - Careless-
ness in the United States is our en-
emy. Le^'s learn then how to prevent
fire and be careful in the future.
Matches are very useful but they
are the mbst dangerous article made
by man. If a factory made one match
for each, minute, night and day, it
would take nearly fourteen years for
it to produce as many matches as this
country uses in one day. Many lif-es
and millions of dollars in /property are
lost every year because of careless-
ness in the direct use of matches. In
lighting matches upon a box, first-
close the box; otherwise the flame
may set fire to the whole box. A
match orr the floor is always a danger-
ous thing. It may be stepped upon
and ignited, or.it may be found by a
little child, or it may be carried in^
the wall or under the floor, by a rat
or mouse.
It is perfectly easy to burn papers
in the stoVe where they can do no
harm. It is not difficult to be sure
that the fire Ts out before: going to bed,
and it does not cost too much to buy
a wire screen to place before the fire.
Boys and girls enjoy bonfires, but do

blowing, for sparks will travel faster
than you think. Do not build too big
a fire, and do not poke it or stand
tqo-near it. Thousands of lives have
been lost and millions of acres of good
timber land have been burned in this
country' just because campers were
careless.
If you dispose carefully of every bit
of your broken furniture, all your old,
newspapers, your oily rags, your worn
put clothing, and all your rubbish of
that kind, you are a good citizen, but
if you allow them to accumulate you
are net only a bad citizen but a men-
ace ito your neighbors. Spontaneous
combustion is a fire that starts itself.
It hqs been discovered that' cotton
waste, oily rags, moist hay, and cer-
tain other things, if left to .themselves
will grow hotter and hotter and finally

j self and should be a virtue of every
! person, for if we are not honest with
ourselves and with our fellow-men, we
are hypocrites. ,
A strong character possesses cour-
! age, courage to do the right as he
sees it. courage to fight against odds,
and courage to act without fear of the
j consequences. i
i Patience and perseverance go hand
ir. hand as attributes of a strong
character, for in order to persevere
j you must be patient, and in order to
: be patient you must have persever-
! ance. stickability. the stubbornesS to
! k^ep on fighting, to carry on, Perse-
verance means success, and patience
is necessary to success' for the kind 1
of success that lasts aud which is the
most valued, is that which comes the
slowest. ,
Unselfishness is a golden virtue.
The greatest example of unselfishness
is found in, our parents who have la-
bored hard and denied themselves
much in order to give -us a start in
life. Denial of ourselves in the in-
terest of others and the helping of
those who need our aid are forms of
unselfishness which we should be wil-
i ling to assume if we want to have a
strong • character.
Without knowledge, we can possess
few of the other attributes of a strong
/character, for without it we cannot
know and uphold our own rights; will
| not know and therefore may not re-
| sped the rights of others; cannot eon-
j trol ourselves jf we do not know our
J own weaknesses and faults, and will
j be unable to govern^and help ourselves
; unless we have a knowledge of life
land its problems. Therefore we should
fall try to know ourselves, life, and
| our fellow-men, not only because
knowledge is power but because ig-
norance is crime.
If we would have a strong character
we must have self-control, for without
it, even though we possess all the
other attributes, we will be like a
| good ship without a rudder. If we'
j cannot control ourselves; we can never
expect to control others, and if we do
not c-oiftrol ourselves, others will have
' to control us.4

it has been breathed for a short time,
or i|t may make with the air a mixture
so explosive that a spark or a flame
will cause a terrible disaster. Do not
strike a match while looking for a
leak. When you find the leak stop it
by turning off the key which may have
beejn left partly open, or by screwing
up the joint which may have worked
loose. A leaky gas fixture or pipe, or
a gas jet ieft turned on, without-be-
