shamming insanity was the burden
of testimony given-today-fay four al-

Dr. Carlos F. McDonald, the flfst
expert called by the prosecution, told
that on September 24 the accused
ex-priest had told him:

Dr. McDonald gave it as his opin-
ion that Schtnidt “is a man of supe-
rior intelligence,” and that he has
shammed insanity much more clev-
erly than an ignorant person oculd
have done. ^
He also thought it possible that .
the four alienists of the defense had
been successfully deceived ; by the |
accused man, and that Dr. HerrmanJ
who examined Schmidt for the royal
court of Munich, Germany, also had
been imposed upon by the. 'simula-
tions, of Schmidt. ? ; . j
Dr. George H. Kirby said he had
found the prisoner’s mind. to be
working rapidly, but that it had giv-
en no indication of abnormality. In CARS. FROM ALL DEPOTS PASS
his opinion, Schmidt’s mind is ra- • '
tionaJ. He doubted the truth of
Schmidt’s assertions that he had vis-
; ions.
i That the accused had answered al$
questions readily and connectedly
[when he examined him last October
was the testimony given by Dr. 4.1-
len F. *Dieffendorff, another of the
state’s alienists. According to’ this
expert, Schmidt is sane, and never
had visions. ..
