Over 400,000 Cars
Need Inspections In
South Texas Area
“There are over 400,000 vehicles
in the South Texas region that
must be inspected before the April
15 inspection dead line,” Captain
Ivan Lawrence said today.
Captain Lawrence, Motor Vehicle
Inspection Supervisor for the De-
partment of Public Safety, pointed
out that there are only about 40
more working days for the state
approved inspection stations before
this dead line.
“Although there are 690 approv-
ed inspection stations in this 39
county region, these stations will
be hard pressed to finish the job
before the dead line, unless the
motorists start having their ve-
hicles inspected now. As spring ap-
proaches we face the possibility of
wet weather, which means most]
inspection stations cannot utilize
all of the working days left. Take
advantage of this pretty weather
and take your vehicle in now for
the state inspection,” Captain Law-
rence concluded.

Reports From
Washington
100 Students Are
Expected For Press
Day Activities
Wiliam P. Hobby, Jr., managing
editor of the Houston Post, will be
chief speaker at a Press Day, Sat-
urday, March 31, for high school
journalism students in Corpus
Christi.
The Sixth Annual Press Day is
sponsored by the Corpus Christi
Press Club for students interested
j in journalism careers.
1 Three $400 scholarships and pro-
j fessional awards totaling $300 will
be given. Miss Eleanor Mortenson,
Press Day Chairman, said scholar-
ships will be awarded a high school

journalism teacher.
Students from all over South
Texas are expected at the one-day
workshop sessions, which will be
held at-the Petroleum Club. Panel
discussions are planned in the

During the 56th Legislature in

John Glenn’s successful orbital
flight last Tuesday had all Wash-
ington dancing in the streets, as
also, from all accounts, were the
people of the Free World every-
where.
To attepy)t to describe the im-
pact of this great feat would be
merely to repeat inadequately what
has been already said and written
hundreds of times since America’s
first astronaut splashed safely in-
to the waters of the Atlantic last
week. It was refreshing, however,
to see calloused indifference en-
I gendered defensively by previous
I failures and disappointments give
| way to unrestrained expressions of
joy at the realization that Ameri-
can ingenuity, resourcefulness and
personal courage had prevailed
again.
No one questioned that America
had clearly established her position
as a front-runner in the conquest
of space. The costs are staggering,
hut few would question that they
must be borne as long as a potential
enemy is develving in these areas
which could well prove productive
of discoveries of immense military
advantage. Then, too, most would
recognize that by-products of this
herculean effort could well be
great gains in science, economics
and world politics.
Echoing American suggestions
dating hack to 1958, Russia quick-
ly indicated a willingness to co-
operate in a common, peaceful
space-effort. Extreme caution, of
course, is advised, but it would
seem sound to presume that such a
suggestion would not have come
from a Russia that continued to
hold a clear technological advant-
age — or, holding one, that she
could long hope to maintain it.
Factually, Russia's advantage has
been superior thrust from huge
rocket engines. Recent indications
are that Russia is thinking in
terms of 40 million pound thrust

engines, whereas the United States
is already successfully testing en-
gines developing 50 million pounds
of thrust. So, it might well be that
America will soon emerge the clear
leader in the field of space science
with all the attendant advantages
in arms, economics and world poli-
tics.
Last year the National Aeronau-
tics and Space Administration took
special notice of South Texas and
recognized that South Texas posess-
es qualifications in the space field
with its large tracts of land facing
easterly sea exposures and acces-
sible to navigable water. NASA
saw our area as one of the rela-
tively few possessing these basic
qualifications for a launching com-
plex similar to Cape Canaveral.
Duplication costs and time urgency
dictated an expansion of Canaveral
in that instance, but the vast ex-
pansion of the space program that
now seems inevitable could well
i mark South Texas for great and
j new horizons in the not-too-distant
| future. This is necessarily conject-
ural, and, because of the geograph-
ical over flight of Florida and Cuba
involved, much will depend on the
degree of realiability developed in
the missiles.
The problem of over-flight
should diminish with the advance-
ment of space flight technology,
and with it could come many new
and bright stars on the horizons of
all South Texas.

They indicated a great interest in
the Refuge and people of Sinton in
extending them this cordial invita-

numerous opportunities to take

that they voted unanimously to se
