ST. PAUL. Minn., Aug. 13.—The
answer of the International Harves-
ter Company to the bill filed by the
United States under the Sherman
anti-trust law was filed in the Unit-
ed States District court at St. Paul 1
this week.
The answer denies all charges of j
restraint of trade, monopoly, and 1
unfair business practices. It alleges
that prior to the formation of the I
company in 1902, the harvester bus-■
iness had been conducted in a waste- j
ful manner, detrimental alike to j
manufacturers, retail dealers, and 1

NEW YORK, Aug. 13.—Within
the last four weeks the people of
New York have been made to real-
ize sharply that there are in their
midst a half dozen gangs of reck-
less criminals more dangerous than
those which disgraced the frontier
towns in the wildest and wooliest
days of the west. The Rosenthal
case brought the seriousness of the
situation out most forcibly, but since
1 it developed several persons have
been shot and at least one passerby
who got in the way of the gangsters
was killed.
“The gangsters,” said George S.
Dougherty, second deputy police
commissioner, “are the vilest and
meanest type of criminals we have
to deal with. They are vicious, cow-
ardly and repulsive; fellows who

Their bitterest fights are among
themselves. They never fieht in the
ouen. They shoot, cut and stab in
the night, and always attack from
behind, or from ambush. But they
are un to date as well, using taxi-
cabs in their attacks on one an-
other.
All this was forcibly illustrated
in the recent war on the ganes led
by Jack Sirocco on one hand, and
Big Jack Zelig on the other. Three
gambling houses were partially de-
stroyed by bombs, and there were
over a dozen assaults and skirm-

JAMFSPORT, Mo., Aug. 13.—Rev.
W. E. Brown, pastor of the Metho-
dist church here, has brought suit
for $2000 against five young men and
four young society women, charg-
ing that they captured his two
blooded Missouri fox hounds and
painted them, one with stripes and
the other with spots.
He declares the hounds ran to
him and smeared his trousers with
paint. He also alleges that they
suffered from lead poisoning.
The bounds are said to have been
treated to the coating of paint at
a party given by Miss Blanche
Thompson, daughter of a James-
port banker, in honor of her ap-
| proaching wedding to Frank Smith.
The defendants are young people of
Jamesport, except Miss Bye Handy,
who lives in Denver.

Apple trees fifty years old, long con-

despite the near failure of the ap-

President George\ Severance, of

made to show the value of proper
care of trees. The bark of the old
trees was scraped, they were spray-
