The bill forbidding the Secretary
cf tbc Treasury or other officers un-
der him to retire or cancel any more
legal tender notes has passed both
bouses of Congress and goes to the
President for his signature. This
certainly hits Johnny Sherman in a
very tender place and will undoubt-
edly interfere with Ins resumption
scheme. It is a victory for Ro.ft
money men and meets with public
favor. If Congress would only listen
to the pleadings of the country,
make one more step, pass the bill re-
pealing the resumption act a sup-
plicating people would bless their
labors. But they will not. The
money power has loosened its grip
sufficiently to allow them to pass the
former bill in the vain hope that it
would stop the clamours of an out-
raged people, hut it will not; we
must bavo redress—more than can
bo squeezed out of tho bill loi bid-
ding the retirement of more legal
tenders.
The late McCrosky scandal is not
allowed to rest. They who so ar-
duously and persistently dissemin-
nated the scandalous aspersions have
no intention ot allowing it to return
to that obscurity whence it emerged.
No possible good can arise from this
and similar vilifications, for oven it
true, thcro are circumstances con-
nected with such defamations winch
niako tho oxpOBuro unproduciivo of
good. Tho faith of religious
people is usually so deeply tixod
with confidence in their leaders
and teaches that they are unwilling
to accept as possible that which may
be demonstrated by indisputable
fads, lienee, it any good results,
which might bo expected, will fail
to ensue in tbe only location whore
good is possible why shall the press
of the county burden itself with the
obloquy of pandering to tho morbid
sensationalism of scandal mongers
without tho anticipation of inculca-
ting good thoughts, moial precepts
or refined taste.
