A lioness, supposed to have es-
caped from some menagerie, is dep-
redating in Hanover county, Virgin-
ia. There is much consternation
among the inhabitants, who are en-
gaged in an active hunt for her.

The Mormon organ at Salt Lake
City denies that there are any mili-
tary preparations among the Latter
Day Saints, and states that Brigham
Young made no incendiary utteran-
ces, as attributed to him.
Mr. Josselyn, of Boston, Mass.,
has purchased a $75,000 stock ranch
in the neighborhood of Helena,
Karnes county, Texas; the ranch
consisting of S,000 acres under fence
and stocked, and with a water front
on the San Antonio river of six
miles.
Samuel J. Tilden, Governor Rob-
inson, and all the leading officials
of the State, declined invitations to
attend the annual banquet of the
Chamber of Commerce in New
York city on the 15th, lest their
presence should seem an endorse-
ment of Mr. Hayes’ election.
Recent discoveries have developed
coal deposits in several localities in
Clay county, and of a good bitumin-
ous character, and it is reported that
coal oil is found at Queen’s Peak,
in Montague county. VV'e are of the
Opinion th t coal will be discovered
in all the W ichita country, and that
there is where we must look for a
sure supply of fuel of that character.
It is evidently the same deposit that
shows itself at McAlester, in the
NVion, and in Eastern Kansas and
Western Missouri.—-Fort Worth
