A dispatch from New Orleans
says tl.at Governor Nicholls lias en-
deavored privately to stop the pros-
ecution of the members of the re-
turning board, but he has been met
with the threat that if he attempts to
defeat the efforts to secure the con-
viction of Wells, Anderson and oth-
ers or if they are convicted and he
interposes an executive pardon, he
will be impeached by the legislature.
Col. John D. Elliott, of the Aus-
tin State Gazette, is supposed to
have the most extensive correspon-
dence of any newspaper editor in
the world. Letters received con-
cerning pre-emption, homesteads,
eic., in Texas, pour in from all parts
of the world at the rate of over 550
a week. At first he replied to all
these correspondents, paying his
own postage, which amounted to
$17 a week, but one day a bright
thought struck him, and he embod-
ied his answers in a newspaper arti-
cle, which he keeps standing in the
Gazette, and by printing every week
,m extra edition of six hundred cop-
ies, he curtails his labor and saves
his letter stamps, without disap-
pointing the discontented thousands
who want to know all about lexas.
