WEDNESDAY •••■• JULY a, 1873.
WOBTHWK8TKRN TEXAS.
We extract the following from a
lengthy, very interesting and truth-
ful correspondence of the New York
Tribune. The writer has recently
completed a tour of our State:
“Denison, Sherman, McKinney,
Corsicana, Dallas, all of the railroad
towns from the Indian frontier to
Houston, have about them the ma-
terial for their support and steady,
rapid growth. The “black waxy”
soil of the surrounding prairies is
nowhere surpassed in productiveness,*
and the crops are not limited to either
corn, wheat, tobacco or cotton—they
all grow with equal vigor, and bring
the farmer rich returns, while the
back country is as rich in pasturage
as any in the world. Riding through
Central Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana,
and Illinois, in the middle of May,
I saw very few of the corn-fields
' plowed or planted, and the wheat in
the best fields was not more than
three or four inches high. In South-
western Missouri the corn was most-
ly planted, but not up. In the In-
dian Territory I first saw the tender
blades above the ground. In North-
ern Texas the corn had been once
plowed and hoed, and the wheat was
beginning to head, and in Central
and Southern Texas grain was al-
most ready for the harvest, while
near Galveston I saw whole fields of
corn covered with roasting-ears.”
