It is a somewhat remarkable fact—at
first sight—that the only papers in Texas
which have said a word against the char-
acter of Cole’s Great Zoological and
Equestrian Exposition, are those of radi-
cal pioclivities. The fact is Piof. Cole
is an uncompromising Democrat. With
the few exceptions above alluded to his
great show has received the endorsement
ot the press of the State as first class in

Homo Stolen ami Recovered. \
Tuesday morning at about 1 a.m. a
horse was stolen from Mr. J. M. Sheeder's
residence. At about 7 o’clock Mr. James
Morgan started in pursuit, having no clue
as to the direction taken, hut solely the
tracks of the horse. About ten miles N. W-
of Denison, on the Preston Bend road, he
was informed that he was on the right
track as a man riding a horse, answering
the description given, had passed tha^
place. About two miles further on Mr,
Morgan noticed that the party had left the
road and evidently rode into a thicket.
Entering lie was fired at bv the tliiet with
a pistol. Three shots were fired at him,
one ball coming very near his head.
Mr. Morgan, who was armed with a shot
gun, fired a shot a. the thief who was dis-
mounted, whereupon the thief ran oil' and
Mr. Morgan secured the horse, which
was tied close by and returned to this city
BETSEY’S GAY DECEIVES.
An Old Lady the Victim of Misplaced Con-
fidence.
St. Louis Times.
An old lady giving the name o
Mrs. Bessie Baker, and claiming to
be sixty years of age, called at the
Chestnut street police station yester-
day and entertained Sergeant Jenks
with an account of how she recently
became the victim of misplaced con-
fidence.
Several weeks ago she met a nice
looking old gentleman by the name
of George A. Baker at Denison.
Texas. He was a traveling man,
and lived in Cairo, he said, and he
was looking for a wife. Bessie
thought he was as nice as he looked,
and when he proposed, she accept-
ed. When he left Denison she went
with him, and they were married
last Thursday in Kansas City and
left the next morning for St. Louis.
Arriving here Friday evening, they
stopped at tiie Union Depot that
night, and yesterday engaged pas-
sage to Cairo on the John B. Maude.
’Before leaving Denison Bessie
sold off all her worldly effects, and
soon after her mairiage had given
the proceeds of the sale, something
over $400, into the charge of her
husband. While waiting for the
boat to leave yesterday, her husband
left, she says, taking the $400 with
him ; and she has seen neither hus-
band nor money since. And now
she wants the police to keep a look
out for a heavy set man with gray
hair and smooth face, and dressed in
a new black felt hat, gaiter shoes,
and a full suit of black with vest
buttoned up to the chin.
Headi that ache, stomachs that inflict
dyspeptic torments, muscles and joints
racked with the rheumatism, are infallib-
ly restored to health by the celebrated
p elixir, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, a med-
icine prescribed by physicians, posessing
infinite purity, and which no one takes in
vain who is afflicted with any of the nu-
merous complaints to which it -is adapted.
It frequently happens that so-called rem-
edies fail to produce a permanent effect.
This is because they are merely palliatives,
mid therefore do not remove the cause of
the maladies, whose symptoms they after
a time cease to ameliorate. This is notably
the cabe with opiates and sedative drugs.
It is not so, however, with Hostetler’s
Stomach Bitters, which are a searching
specific that conquers the disease as well
as banishes its indicia.

The reply of Mr. Boss to the letter of
“A Teacher,” which appeared in the
News of Saturday morning, was of such
a personal nature that Mr. A. D. Mar-
tinier, of this city, brother-in-law 01 the
ladv, felt it his duty to demand a retrac-
tion of the insinuat" against her char-
acter, and sent a note to Mr. Boss to that
effect. Mr. Boss promptly replied by-
retracting all insinuations of a personal
nature, in the said communication, sta-
ting that it was not his intention to cast
any such reflections, and expressing a de-
sire to correct anv impressions of that
character which might have been drawn
from the article in the News.
Mr. Martinier accepted of the apology
as satisfactory, and thus a matter which
might have resulted in a serious difficulty
has been amicably adjusted.
We are gratified at the result, for we
have no doubt Mr. Boss wrote the letter
hastily, and without fully comprehending
the construction that was quite likely to
be placed upon his language. Mr. Mar-
tinier, in pursuing the course he did, was
simply doing wluit lie deemed to he a
duty—to defend the character of an esti-
mable lady from reproach.
It would have been much better if the

How rarely we meet a person of whom
we can say, he or she is the “Picture ol
