The News is indebted to Messrs
Mooney & Morrison, compilers ot
| City Directories in Texas, for a copy of
their large and very complete general
and business directory of the city of
Houston. The work belore us is a book
of some 350 pages. The printing, which
was done by W. M. Hamilton, Houston,
is excellent, and the book is in every
respect creditable alike to publishers and
printer.
Messrs. Mooney & Morrison arc now
engaged upon a directory for Austin.
Three of the chain gang escaped from
the guard, just south ol the city, late
Saturday afternoon. The force had been
at work at the crossing in Post Oak
creek on the Mantua road, and having
finished work for the day, were returning
to the city. One of them in the rear ol
the gang pretended to have found a centi-
pede in the road, and called the others
back to 100k at it. The guard walked
back, and while his attention was thus
engaged, three ol the prisoners took to
the brush, with their balls and chains
swinging over their shoulders. The
guard fired two or three shots at them as
they ran, but without effect. He couldn’t
give chase for fear that the others would
get aw ty. As soon as the Sheriff was
notified of the escape, he instituted a
thorough search for them, but no trace
could be found. — Tuesday's Register.

A conductor on the Central who came
up the road Monday, reported that he
heard Ned Parker, the man who sold pens
and scattered greenbacks so lavishly in
this city some weeks since, was killed at
Troupe, on the International road. Ac-
cording to the story as he heard it, Par-
ker was attempting to get on the tram
when it was in motion and slipped, falling
under I he wheels. The fact that no men-
tion of the accident has appeared in the
Dallas papers, makes Mr. Parker’s friends
here doubt the cot rectness of the report.
Parker wrote to a gentleman here from
Houston on the 1st, saying he should
start for Arkansas the next day.

Whitesboro, Texas, )
April 5, 1877. )
Editor Daily Nrius:
1 started from your town on Monday,
the 2d inst., traveling zig-zag through
the country, and reaching this quiet little
country town on Wednesday, the 4th,
On my trip I made it a point to learn
from personal observation, as well as
from the opinion of those who are
watching closely every movement of the
grasshopper, what we are to fear from
these pests, and 1 find that the farmers
are not so despairing as the “citv folks”
generally expect to find them. They are
pushing their labors with vigor, satisfied
the hoppers will be on the wing soon,
and if corn should have to be replanted
that they will make their crops.
The country in the vicinity of Whites-
boro is now so thickly settled with farm-
ers that were it not for the cross-ler.ces
and openings (or travel it would look to
be one va t field of green wheat and
fresh turned soil.
The town is not so fast in improve-
ments—has been on a standstill for some-
lime, though a little R. R. talk i» just
now enthusing her citizens somewhat
The Shilo Baptist Association is having
erected at this place a first class seminary,
60 by 40 feet, three stories high, the
upper story to biu.-ed as a hall by the
Free Masons. The work on this build-
ing, and the material used in its con-
struction is of the very best, and it will be
an ornament 10 the tow . Capt. T. J.
Dove, the architect and builder, informed
us that although this edifice was being
constructed by the Baptist denomination,
it would be no sectarian school, but
open to all.
A. B. White one of the old-timers of
Wh t shoro, who says lie assisted in lay-
ing off" the town many years ago, is now
proprietor of the Farmers’ House, and
manifested his good wi 1 toward Denison
by handing over the cash for 500 cards
and one years subscription to the Weekly
News.
Pilot Point, Denton Co., Tex., )
April 7, 1S77. j
The public square is crowded with wag-
ons loaded with men, women and chil-
dren from the rural districts to-day, and
like all country towns on Saturday an un-
usual amount of business is being trans-
acted with the merchants.
A man wdio claimed to be from Bon-
ham, and said he was over on business,
created a sensation a few days since in
this neighborhood. Parties here were
suspicious of him. and were on the look-
out. Me was seen late in the evening
about a farmer’s premises, and it seems
tii.it the old granger was in no hurry to
retire on that account, but kept watch
over ins horse lot Late at night the
suspicious person stole into the barn-
yard and ‘ gobb'ed 'a horse, but had
hardly made a motion to retreat when the
fanner fired at him, and empted three
barrels of his pistol before the would-be
robbe, got out of reach. The man was
tracked by blood for some distance the
next morning, but up to this time neither
the man nor his carcass have been dis-
covered
On tli i route from Collinsville to the
Point, the wheat field- are almost cleai
of grasshoppers. They are leaving the
fi Ids and taking to the woods. The
banks ot a little stream running through
this neighborhood are black with dead
hoppers.
Farmers generally are well advanced
with their work, and say that there will
be a large demand for help in tiie busy
season. They are all planting much
larger crops than they are able to manage
with the present foiee. Crop prospects
are very flattering. W. W. II.

A Card for Rational Reader*.
Irrational people always reject good ad-
vice, and in nothing is their folly more
conspicuous than in ignoring precautions
necessary for the retention of health.
Forecast, on the other hand, is a notable
characteristic of the rational, and it is the
exercise of this quality which we would
suggest to them. Protect the system
against diseases which fasten upon the
debilitated, the nervous and the dyspeotic,
bv bracing the physique, legulating the
stomach, bowels and liver and banishing
deapondency with the purest and most ef-
ficient of botanic invigorants, Hostetler’s
Stomach Bitters. That the-e effects fol-
low its use, and that it prevents a* well as
annihilates intermitent as well as remit-

putable evidence. 'To enjoy the twin
