Oliver P. Morton.
The death of the distinguished In
diana senator, 0. P. Morton, has: bind he lived
made a void in the republican party
that will be hard to fiil in many at-
11 Unites, as a great leader. There
are none left that equal him—bold,
skillful and aggressive. To him,
more than any one living, is that
party indebted for being saved a Wa-
terloo deft at in 1N76. But for his
presence on the Pacific coast during
the close of that exciting political
campaign, there is little doubt that
the electoral votes of Califovna and
Oregon would hate been cast for
Tihlen and Hendricks, and theques
tion been thus settled by the people
instead ot the 7 to 8 commission.
Senator Mm ton was bom in
Wajnc county. Indiana, August 4th,
1S23 ; graduated at the Miama Uni-
versity ; studied and practiced law ;
was elected Circuit Judge of the
South Judicial Circuit of Indiana in
1852 ; was elected Lieut. Governor
of same state in i8o >, and became
Coventor,, in 1861 when Govornui
Lane was elected to the U. S. Sen
ate; was cho>en Governor by the
people in 1864, anil was elected to
the United States Senate to succeed
Lane, and took Ids seat March 4U1,
lS<>7 i was re-elected to the Senate
in 1872, and his term of office would
have expired March 3 1, 1879.
Such in brief is the history of one
who, for flte last fifteen years has
shaped the policy of a party that
numbered its adherent., by millions.
Oil his accession to the Senate, Air.
Morton at once assumed the leader-
ship of tiie radical wing of his party,
and on the various reconstruction
