Political Arithmetic.
I'roin the Galveston News.
Regarding a passing remark of
t.ie News that the Republicans have
made important gains in Vermont, a
friendly critic takes occasion to re
mmd us that the figures exhibit a
still more important per centage ol
gains for the Democrats. lie
writes:
The Republican vote in 1S75 was 33,-
5&., and in 1S76, 44.3S5, showing a pain
ot onlv 33J per cent. The Democratic
vote of 1S74 was 13,258. and in 1876, 21,-
j'35i showing a gain of over 50 per ce.it.
By comparing the relative gains, uw
will seethe Democrats have exceeded
ihe Republicans in increase of vote near
twenty per cent. The same ratio in Ohio
will secure that state for Tiiden Ken
dricks. II. J L.
