Valdez New Director
Of La Villa Band
The La Villa Independent School
District has employed a new band
director. He is Antonio G. Valdez,
Jr., of Weslaco.,
Mr. Valdez play's the piano and
trumpet and he teaches all musi-
cal- instruments.
He holds a B. S. Degree in Mu-
sic Education from the University
-of Houston where he performed
with the University Symphony Or-
chestra and Band while he was at-
tending school at the University.
He played with the U. S. Army
Band for three years, and was al-
so in the 1st Calvery Division and
the 5th Armored Divisional Bands.

left la’st week for Norman, Okla.,
to visit her brother-in-law and sis-
ter, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Keas, Jr
and niece Carol Ann. Carolyn will
care for her while Mrs. Keas com-
pletes her college work. She is a
candidate for her degree from
University of Oklahoma in August
Mr. Keas is at Camp Hood for
six weeks’ training in the Nation-
al Guard.
Mrs. Delmar Sikes and children
left Monday for their home in San
Antonio following a week-end visit
here with Mr. and lyirs. Ulmer
Sikes and other Valley relatives at
La Villa.

returned to her home recently af-
ter visiting in the home of her
brother-in-law and family Mr. and
Mrs. Tommy Elliot and children of
Edcouch for two weeks.
Mrs. Gene Kelly was a patient
at Mercedes General Hospital last
week.
Mrs. Mathis Norris and her two
grandchildren, Jan and Mike Nor-
ris, returned recently from Fort
Worth, where they visited the form-
ers son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. R. E. Johnson and fam-
ily. Nancy Johnson retured with
her gradmother for a visit.

following a two-week visit here at

by way of Austin where they spent
Monday night and continued on
home Tuesday.

ren Sims, of Houston. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Top Shows Listed
For Wes-Mer Drive In
The Wes-Mer Drive In Theatre,
located midway between Mercedes
and Weslaco on U. S. Highway 83,
has a number of top feature films
for mid - Valley patrons.
A return engagement of “From
Here To Eternity” will open to-
night and continues through .Sat-
urday. The 1953 Academy Award
winner stars Burt Lancaster Mont-
gomery Clift Deborah Kerr and
Frank Sinatra. The film won 8
Academy Awards in 1953 and the
Wes-Mer’s engagement is the only
one 'scheduled in the Valley at the
present time.
Sunday and Monday the Wes-Mer
will present a return engagement
of “All Mine to Give” which was
filmed in Technicolor and Cine-
mascope. “All Mine to Give” was
first shown at the Wes - Mer five
months ago and because of the
weather the attendance was down.
However those who did see it were
so lavish in their praise that the
theatre management decided to
bring it back. The picture was
adapted from the unforgetable
book and magazine story “The
Day They Gave Babies Away” and
stars Glynis Johns, Cameron
Mitchell, Rex Thompson and Pat-
ty McCormack.
Tuesday and Wednesday the
Wes-Mer will present another fam-
ily type double program in “Un-
derwater Warrior” starring Dan
Dailey and “Johnny Trouble” with
Ethel Barrymore and Carolyn
Jones.
John O’Hara’s shock spiked dra-
ma “10 North Frederick Street”
starring Gary Cooper and Texas’
own Suzy Parker will be the spe-
cial 4th of July attraction at the
Wes-Mer.

thy Brown gave the readiing, “The
Girl Mother Used to Be.” Mrs.

Study Book. This was about Step-
hen the first martyr. All members
participated in the discussion.

BIBLE SCHOOL COMPLETED

work exhibited Sunday night by
children of the Evangelical Mis-
sionary Church’s Vacation Bible
School that concluded last week..
The 150 children enrolled main-
tained a daily average attendance
of close to 100, the Rev. and Mrs.
Andrew Rojas said.
Two To Visit Children
In Albuquerque, N. M.
Mrs. D. J. McAlexander and
Mrs. L. B Doshier left Sunday
for Albuquerque, N. M., where
they will visit their son and daugh-
ter Mr. and Mrs. Don McAlexan-
der, and family. They will stay in
the home with the two youngest
children while the parents take
Lynn, their oldest daughter, to a
heart specialist in Denver Colo.
Friday. The grandmothers will
bring the children back to spend
month in Edcouch. The parents
will come for them in August.

GIRL IS MARRIED
AT CORPUS CHRISTI
Miss Adrienne Lynnae Brown
of Corpus Christi, formerly of La
Blanca became the bride of Ray-
mond Fredrick Smith of Browns-
ville in the chapel of the First
Presbyterian Church of Corpus
Christi last Saturday afternoon.
She is the daughter of Mrs. Wan-
da Brown of Corpus Christi, and
his parents are Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Smith of Edinburg..
The bride, a graduate of Edin-
burg High School and Pan Amer-
ican College, was a member of
Elsa Presbyterian Church and
had sponsored a youth group for
several years.
He served eight years in the
navy and attended Valpraiso In-
stitute in Indiana. He is now a
radio engineer for the Border Pa-
trol at Brownsville..
Given in marriage by her fa-
ther, Victor Brown, also of Corpus
Christi, the bride chose a ballerina
length dress of Chantilly lace over
satin. A satin bow accented the
back waistline. Net ruffles form-
ed a flounce at the back of the
full skirt. A crown of pearls caught
her veil of illusion.
Mrs. Keith Miller of Edinburg
and Charles Wilson of Brownsville
were the couple’s attendants.
Elwyn Brown was usher.
Otto Moellering of Corpus
Christi played the traditional wed-
ding music and accompanied Mrs.
Glenn Moore of Elsa, who sang
“Perfect Love” and “The Lord’s
Prayer.”
A reception at the home of the
bride followed the ceremony.
The couple will be at home in
Brownsville after a month’s honey-
moon at Niagara Falls New York
New Hampshire and Canada.

TRUCK DRIVER IN COLLISION
A car-truck collision at the in-
tersection of Highway 107 and rail-
road street here has resulted in a
charge of driving left of center,
not in passing, against Jaime Na-
ranjo of Donna.
The charge was filed before Jus-
tice of the Peace W. K. Galbreath,
county highway patrolman Jack
Pope reported.
Pope said Naranjo was driver
of the truck, traveling west on the
highway, which collided with a
car driven by Emelia Garza Gu-
tierrez of Edcouch. The car was
headed north on Railroad Street.
Property damage; hut no injuries,
resulted, the officer said.

Funeral Services Held
For Fred Lake Clark
Funeral services for Fred Lake
Clark, 62, a La Blanca resident
Since 1936, were held Saturday in
the Skinner Mortuary Chapel, with
the Rev. Conway Wharton officiat-
ing. Burial was in the Hillcrest
cemetery.
Clark died June 17 in the Naval
Hospital at Corpus Christi. He was
a World War I veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Del-
la Irene; five daughters, Mrs.
Elsie Murphy, Smithport, Pa.,
Mrs. Beverly Jones, La Blanca,
Maude Virginia Clark and Della
Irene Clark, La Blanca, Mrs.
Betty Priddy, Batesville; and
three sons, Cris, Edinburg, Fred,
Jr., and Clifford Palmatier, Pharr.

Meet For Bible Study
The two Women’s Missionary
Union Circle of the First Bap-
tist Church met last week for their
Bible study on Stephen, taken
from the sixth and seventh chap-
ters of Acts.
The Mary Morgan Circle met
with Mrs. Raymond Wade, June
17. Mrs. Guy McCormac, assisted
by Mrs. Carrie Netz, gave the Bible
lesson.
Refreshments were served to
seven members.
The Opal Walker Circle
met with Mrs. Carl Merrimen of
Elsa June 18 with the Bible
lesson led by Mrs. Carl Leeper.

members and one guest, the host-

Ledge, Mich.
Program Closes Vacation School
The La Blanca Baptist Church
closed its Vacation Bible school
last Thursday with a program at
the church.
The Rev. Charles Petty, pastor,
was director of the scool. Forty-
six pupil were enrolled.
Those assisting were Mesdames
Calvin Smith Charles Petty Ver-
nell Brown, Joe Witt, Frank Van,
C. E. Harper, Leon Smith, J. E.
Johnson and J. D. Johnson.
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Furgeson
from Pampa and children came
Sunday and are spending this week
in the home of her sister’s family,
the V. H. Sanders.
Mrs. Nettie Huffman of Monon,
Ind., is visiting her granddaughter,
Mrs. Billy Maloy, Mr. Maloy and
children, and a daughter-in-law,
Mr. Mildred Elston of Weslaco
for two weeks.
