Employment program assisting local youth
Palackx Beacon, Jane 5,1986-Page 3
40 J
Teenage unemployment espec-
ially among economically disad-
vantaged and minority youth
continues to be a major problem
throughout the nation. Helping
to ease this situation locally is the
Summer Youth Employment Pro-
gram sponsored by the Palacios
Independent School District.
“Our school district has par-
ticipated in federal manpower
programs such as the summer
program since 1966," Robert
Long, the project director of the
program stated. “This year the
Houston-Galveston Area Coun-
cil’s Private Industry Council has
awarded us a contract totaling
$1,393,649.” The Private Indus-
try Council is composed of
businessmen and educators that
are aware, of local labor market
needs. Mayor Leonard Lamar
and Robert Long are members of
the Council from Matagorda
County.
"Our chief objective is to keep
these young people in school,”
Long continued. “After a stud-
ent's employment goals and
skills are assessed, they are
placed in private or public non-
profit agencies where they cam
the minimum wage. Not only do
they receive actual work ex-
perience, but counseling and
labor market information are
stressed enabling the participant
to obtain and retain employment
after graduation from high sch-
ool.
“The success rate of the
program,” Long pointed out, "is
shown by the fact that last year
98 percent of the participants
either continued their education
or were placed in the full time
labor market. Our school district
can be very proud of the part it is
playing in reducing teenage
unemployment and combatting
the drop out problem.”

Employment program can call

Pre-schoolers
perform a
Texas salute
Seventeen Presbyterian pre-
school students performed for
their parents, friends and rela-
tives on May 26. The evening's
activities consisted of songs and
fingerpiays. A special poem
entitled “This Is Texas” was
presented by the class as a salute
to Texas.
One of the class puppets
presented the children their cer-
tificates and “Oh No” helped
them count to 50.
The refreshment table was
decorated with red and blue. Two
cakes, one a Texas flag and
another a Sesquicentennial flag,
along with sandwiches and cook-
ies and punch, were served to the
guests.
C&B Photo took group and
individual pictures for the class
to have as a remembrance of
their year in preschool.
Participating in the program
and receiving certificates were
the following children: Brent Cal-
houn, Iris Daly, Ryan Divers,
David Flores, Eddy Garcia, Eli-
zabeth Gonzales, Renee Henley,
Brent Herzik, Aaron Jobs, Mar-
cos Martinez, Mary Nichols,
Santos Perez, Jesse Rodrigues,
David Stonestreet, Kelley Strub-
le, Westly Thompson and Court-
ney Wallis.
