Shark cagers looking strong at mid-season
BY NICK WEST
Palacios Beacon Publisher
The resurgent Palacios Shark hoopsters have
plenty to be happy about as they head into the
holiday break to close out the first half of the
1992-93 basketball season. A year ago at this
juncture, the Big Red were standing at 6-6. This
time out, however, Coach J. E. Todd's Big Red
cagcrs have built up a strong 9-4 ledger head-
ing into Christmas week.
The holiday break finds the Sharks coming
off a bittersweet 1-1 week. It was a week which
saw them post their fifth straight win (71-69
over Industrial) only to have the streak snapped
by Calhoun on Friday, 62-45.
Todd's hardwood boys will return to action
on Dec. 30 when they host Van Vlcck for a 3
p.m. contest.
Although the district battle docs not tip-off
until Jan. 15, the Sharks already boast the sec-
ond best overall record among league rivals.
Only the Edna Cowboys, at 11-3 as of last Fri-
day, carry a better mark.
The trio of Cary Todd, Trent Wcixclman
and Gary Haynes have powered the Sharks' of-
fensive attack, all averaging in double figures
through 13 outings. Bolstered by a deadly
three-point arm, Todd leads the squad with a
15.7 point per game average. Wcixelman has
been hitting at an 11.1 PPG clip followed by
Haynes at 10.1.
PHS 45, CALHOUN 62
Last Friday, however, only Todd was able to
hit his average against the fast and aggressive
Sandcrabs of Calhoun. Although Palacios
stayed within striking distance through the first
three periods, the Sandcrabs used their tena-
cious defense to pull away with a 62-45 win. It
was the 13th win of the season for Calhoun
while the loss broke the Sharks' own five game
winning streak.
Todd, who had four three-pointers enroute
to a 16 point performance, tossed in a three-
pointer midway through the first period to pull
Palacios to within two of Calhoun, 11-9. How-
ever, the Sandcrabs responded by reeling off
cighi unanswered points and held an 18-12
lead at the end of the frame. Seven more points
to open the second period made it 25-12 be-
fore Michael Harvey and Steve Allums hit
back-to-back buckets. Down by 10 with two

The 7-3 junior varsity came
away with a split decision in
basketball action last week.
The team opened by defeating
Industrial, only to fall to Cal-
houn on Friday.
A see-saw confrontation
marked the first three periods
of play against Calhoun before
the Sandcrabs pulled away for
a 43-35 win.
Palacios had staked out a
tenuous 8-7 lead in the first,
but the lead alternated between
the two clubs over the next two
frames. Calhoun moved in
front 19-18 at the half and
maintained that margin in the
third as both squads hit for
nine points. The turning point
came in the fourth when the
Sandcrabs struck for 15 points
to take the 43-35 win.
Nine points from Tuan
Nguyen led the JV Sharks with
Victor Terrasas and G. J.
Hafernick adding six each.
Wesley Hutto hit for five fol-
lowed by Buster Byrd and Ja-
son Novak with four each.
Jonathan Sample had one.
PHS 37, INDUSTRIAL 22
The jayvee Sharks overcame
a slow start earlier in the week
to upend Industrial, 37-22.
The Cobras had taken a 7-3
first period lead, but Palacios
bounced back to dominate the
middle two frames. The Sharks
outscored Industrial 10-2 in
the second to move in front
13-9 and continued the assault
in the third, running up a 28-
13 command before holding
on the fourth for the win.
Terrasas led the attack with
10 points while Vinh Nguyen
had six followed by Byrd and
Joe Diaz with four each.
Hafernick tallied three. Novak,
Darren Okruhlik, Johnathan
Sample, Hutto and Detric Jones
had two each.

minutes left in the half, the Sharks closed the
gap to 28-22 on a goal by Harvey and a pair of
free throws from Wade Kubecka. Calhoun got
the final say, however, capitalizing on two
technicals against Palacios to increase the lead
to 30-22 at intermission.
Haynes got on target in the third, scoring all
four of his points in that frame as the Sharks
tallied 16. Todd Day's three-pointer, followed
by a bucket from Kubccka with 6:00 left in the
period, cut the deficit to five, 35-30. Unfortun-
tely, the Sandcrabs also stepped up their attack,
taking advantage of steals and offensive re-
bounds to net 19 points and open up a 49-38
command. Calhoun's defense went on to limit
the Sharks to only seven points in the final pe-
riod.
Kubecka hit for six points in the game with
Day adding five. In addition to Haynes, both
Harvey and Wcixlcman also scored four while
Allums and I. J. Polk netted two each.
PHS 71, INDUSTRIAL 69
Solid performances by both teams made for
an exciting matchup earlier in the week as the
Sharks edged the combative Cobras of Indus-
trial, 71-69, to improve to an impressive 9-3.
A quartet of Sharks pounded the bucket for
double figures in a well balanced scoring at- ,yt
tack. Haynes, who finished will) a team high 20
points, put eight on the board in the first pciiod;,.;;.
to lead the Sharks a 21-14 advantage.
Although Palacios held a 33-26 lead at the.;,.-
half, the Cobras, led by John Haul who netted.;.
24 points on the night, rebounded in the sec-;Jj|
ond half. Industrial outscored Palacios 17-13 in;.;«
the third to trim to deficit to 46-43. F-;
Both teams turned the pressure up in the fi-j;.’:
nal frame. Todd tossed in 10 points in the pe-;:;:
riod, including a pair of three-pointers, while:^;
Haynes hit for nine as Palacios struck (or 25:;%
points. Industrial, meanwhile, unleashed a 26rj$
point attack that put the Cobras in front late in
the game. With 2:48 remaining, Wcixclman:.:.
broke a 61-61 deadlock with a pair ol free “
throws that put the Sharks back in Iront, 63-61.
A thrcc-pointcr by Hartl with less than 20 see- .;
onds left again tied the action at 69-69, but
Haynes sank a pass from Todd at the buzzer to
pull out the victory, f j
Todd hit the hoop for 17 points on the night >
and Kubccka slammed in 16 points. Wcixclman
also reached double digits with 13 while Polk :
put four on the board.
Clearing his own path
BLOWING past a trio of Sandcrabs, junior varsity Shark eager Vinh Nguyen goes air-
borne for a shot last Friday. The lead switched back-and-forth through three periods before
the visiting jayvee Sandcrabs pulled out a 43-35 victory in the fourth period. Both the var-
sity and JV Sharks break for the holidays before returing to host Van Vleck at 3 p. m. Dec.
