Sheriff Kingsbery of this
county, on last Thursday effeci
ted the arrest of a desperate
ciitninal in possession of a
valuable horse, stolen in East-
land county, and which he was
riding at the time. His name
is Richard Brannon, although
at the time of arrest be was go-
ing under the assumed name of
Churles Hart. He arrived in
Ccleman Wednesday night,
about 0 o’clock, and left at 2
the same night. The owner of
the' horse, Mr. Waterman, ar-
rived here Thursday morning,
and with Sheriff Kingsbury,
followed the thief into the Ma-
honey pasture, where they
found that lie had tested. Troni
this point they tracked him to )
the Colorado river, and got
within a hundred yards of hint
before he discovered that |te
was followed, but as the sherjlfr
had a bead on him hndj was
riding at full run toward jhlrb,
there was no chance of escape
or defense, so tie surrendered
and gave up his arms, a forty-
liver and a smaller pistol. Bran-
nan was landed in the Coleman
jail Thursday afternoon, and
as lie in some respects corres-
ponded to the description of a
Missouri fugitive, he waft t.iid
to undress, Brannon asked
why, and the sheriff told him
he wanted to look for certain
bullet scars, one on right side
of spine, one on lower part of
right hip and' one on left hip.
Brannon remarked to the sher-
iff that he had his man and
that the scars were there. On
examination the scars were
found as described, as well us
hdles*pierced in the ears, also
mentioned in description.
1 An examining trial was had
and Brannon was held ill the
suifi of #1000 to -await the ac-
tion of the next grand jury,
and failing to give the bond he
was placed behind the bars.
Brannon is a noted highway-
man, burglar and horse thief,
and has served four years in
the Missouri penitentiary for
horse Stealing and four years
at Chester, 111., sent up from
Austin, Texas, for life, fot,U. S.
