Just out for a stroll
CLARA Sabaltura (far left) was out with her little friends, Rocky and Piggy, for a walk
last week. The baby raccoons were found, abandoned by their mother, when they were
about four weeks old. Sablatura has had them since. (Beacon photo by Kristen Gibbs.)

City sales tax rebate
remain ahead of 495
despite recent drop
Despite a decline in its most
recent rebate check, the City of
Palacios continues to run a
head of last year’s pace in the
amount of its city sales tax re-
bate payment.
The July rebate to the city
amounted to $13,441. That was
down slightly more than 12%
HoweV£r, for the year-to-
date, the total amount of re-
bates is up 5.68% from last
year. Through the first seven
months of 1996, the rebates
have amounted to $134,356 as
compared to $127,127 for the
same period a year ago.
Statewide, rebates to the
1,080 Texas cities and 115
counties which levy a local
sales tax were up an average of
6.7% from July 1995 alloca-
tions.
The city sales tax is col-
lected on sales by businesses
and merchants along with the
state sales tax. Both are submit-
ted monthly to the State
Comptroller’s Office which in
turn rebates the local tax back
to the entity in which it was
collected. The July rebates are
for taxes collected on May
sales and reported to the
Comptroller in June.
Among seven area cities
which levy a city sales tax, all
but one are running ahead of
last year’s rebate payments.
Port Lavaca has registered the
largest percentage increase
from last year at this time, up
10.19% at $713,434. Ganado
has seen a gain of 8.72% to
$55,248 while Edna’s rebates
are up 5.31% to $358,543. In
El Campo, the amount of re-
bates is up 4.72% at $897,847
with Bay City showing a more
modest 2.31% gain to
$567,923. Wharton’s rebates
are up only .51% to $543,226.
The only decline among the
seven cities is for Point Com-
fort, down 22.53% to $26,373
as compared to $34,046 as of
July 1995. <«*il
iPain may be
eliminated
for millions
(SPECIAL) - A drug that is excit-
ing researchers in the treatment of
pain has been formulated into a new
product known as "Arthur Itis™"
and is being called a "Medical
Miracle" by some, in the treatment
of debilitating conditions such as
arthritis, bursitis, rheumatism, pain-
ful muscle aches, joint aches, simple
backache, bruises, and mere. Al-
though the mechanism of action is
unclear, experiments indicate that
Arthur Itis™ relieves pain by first
selectively ^attracting, and then de-
stroying the messenger dtemical
which carries pain sensations to die
brain, thus eliminating pain in the
affected area. Arthur ltis» is an
odorless, greaseless, non-staining
cream and is available immediately
without a prescription and is guar-
anteed to work. Um onl, «• <*rae»A
