Older Texans to elect Silver-Haired delegates
I Friday, May 30, is Election
Day, for registered voters in
Matagorda £oonty who were 60:
years of age or older on January
1, 1986 to cast their ballots to
choose their delegate to Texas’
Erst Silver-Haired Legislature.
The group will convene in Austin'
lor a three-day session in late
September.
The Silver-Haired Legislature
will be a mock legislature which
will consider and vote on issues
(hat concern the needs of Older
Texans of both today and tomorr-
' ow and make recommendations
to the 1987 regular session of the
Texas Legislature.
The Palacios Senior Center at
705 Commerce will serve as the
polling location locally. Other
polling places within Matagorda
County, are the Bay City Senior
Center’, Markham Community
Center, Sargent Fire Station and
Pledger Community Center.
The Silver-Haired Legislature
, will consist of 116 delegates-- all
609 years of age or older- elected
by their peers across the state on
Friday, May 30. Absentee voting
began May 1 and concludes
Friday, May 23.

Area Council serves as Area
Agency on Aging will select four
delegates to the Silver-Haired
Legislature.
To assist in the election pro-
ces, the HGAC Silver-Haired
Legislature Steering Committee
has divided the 12-county area
‘into four voting districts, with
one delegate to be elected from
each.
Matagorda County is paired
with the adjoining counties of
Brazoria and Wharton as one of
the four voting districts.
The names of the eight candi-
dates for election to the Silver-
Haired Legislature from this
district, in order of their appear-
ance on the ballot, are Jess Lyle
Sanford, Charles Daniel Long,
Raymond Aaron Howell, Betty
Kent Clemens, Robert E. Roger,
Gerhard Ansel, Opal M. Howell,
and Ruth A. Hermansen.
Election procedures will foll-
ow the state election process in
Texas, except voting hours will
begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at
3 p.m. Executive Director Eula-

Action Committee of the Gulf

Friends of Elder Citizens, Inc.,

The Houston-Galveston Area
Council is assisting the election
process in the 12-county area it
serves as Area Agency on Aging.
It is the region's voluntary asso-
ciation of local governments and
local elected officials and assists
communities in conducting pro-
grams providing social and nutri-
tion services to senior citizens in
Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Co-
lorado, Fort Bend, Galveston,
Matagorda, Montgomery, Walk-
er, Waller, and Wharton count-
ies.

ed in May 1961 with 47 members.
To date, there are only 17
members but have volunteered
2101 hours of work for 1985. Mr.
Shannon Flynn, Administrator of
Matagorda County Hospital also
gave thanks. So did Mr. Gus
Franzen of the MCHD Board of
Managers,

their work at the hospital but for
their teas given throughout the
year, open house for Dr. O’Neal
and furnishing the Meditation

With generous donations re-
cently received from Mrs. Mar-

Teachers Association concluded
ti their 1985-86 year of activities

Convention in Dallas.
This unit had the largest
number of new members of any
unit in the state with out-
standing growth and service.
Local recipients receiving State
Awards were president Kathleen
Strozier, Gold Medal, Silver Star
and 20th Century Teacher Award
for Promoting Better Public
Service; Daisy Newton, Volun-
teer Service; and Bob Renfro,
Athena banquet
The Athena Club closed its’
1985- 86 year with a banquet at
Weimar Hall May 13.
Mary Friery welcomed the
members and guests. Reverend
Willke gave the invocation. Mary
thanked her officers.
The following officers for year
1986- 87 were introduced; presi-
dent, Margaret McElrath; vice
president, Lorene Treacy; sec-
retary, Mary Friery; treasurer,
Juanita Madden and parliament-
arian, Vivian Newsome.
Margarite Boulding entertain-
ed the group with a humorous
description of club women and
their meetings and activities.
Hostesses for the banquet
were Mildred Roane, Grace
Gideon and Loucille Schulte.
