Grain signup time underway
Matagorda County far-
mers can now sign up for
the 1983 feed grain and
wheat acreage reduction
programs, according to
Johnny J. Kallus, County
Executive Director. The
program requires that
farmers reduce their
wheat and feed grain
planted acreage by 20
percent of the establish-
ed base to qualify for
program benefits. Acre-
age reduction require-
ments are 10 percent
with a 10 percent paid
land diversion for feed
grain and 15 percent
with a 5 percent paid land
diversion for wheat.
All farmers with an
established base who
plant feed grain and/or
wheat are eligible to
participate in the volun-
tary programs. Those
who sign up will be
eligible for land diversion
payments, deficiency
payments and price sup-
port loans.
"Farmers may request
50 percent of the 1983
diversion payments and
50 percent of the project-
ed deficiency payments
when they sign up for the
programs," Kallus said.
Land diversion payments
have been established at
$1.50 per bushel for corn
and sorghum. $1.00 for
barley, 75 cents for oats
and $2.70 per bushel for
wheat. "The land diver-
sion payment is based on
one half the per bushel
payment rate times the
farm yield times the
acres diverted."
Kallus said if a farmer
accepts an advance pay-
ment and later does not
comply with the acreage
reduction program provi-
sions, he or she will be
required to refund the
amount of the advance
payment plus interest.
Interest charged will be
the rate in effect for
commodity loans on the
date of the advance pay-

Snug and warm
Next time winter winds blow,
notice the most comfortable homes
in your neighborhood. You con be
sure those families use a natural
gas heating system.
And for all the right reasons.
A gas heating system is an out-
standing money saver compared
to an electric system. That's be-
cause gas heating uses primary
energy two and a half times as
efficiently. And it's more depend-
able, too. Which is why natural
gos heating gives the best homes
a warm feeling all over.
