News Report
Written by Sherry Balfanz
“Thirty days hath Sept-
ember, April, June and
November, all the rest
have 31, except February
which has 28." An old
rhyme we all used to learn
just to remember how
many days to each month.
It really came about when
the Romans, under Julius
Caesar, invented
the Julian calendar. They
decided to give the months
with special religious
meaning 31 days and the
rest of the months only 30
days. January named after
the god Janus, March after
Mars, and July in honor of
Caesar himself, all these
have 31 days.
Caesar's successor Au-
gustus, named August
after himself, and to give it
'31 days, he borrowed a day
from February and reduc-
ed the days of February to
28. Then to avoid a succes-
sion of three long months.
Augustus made Septem
her and November 30 day
months and lengthened
October and December to
31 days.
