Use of smaller cars
Increases problems
for the handicapped
COLLEGE STATION -
Smaller cars make it increas-
ing!) difficult for people in
wheelchairs to drive and ride in
automobiles, says a engineer
with the Texas Transportation
Institute (TTI).
Some 100,000 to 200,000 dis-
abled persons'arc capable of
operating vehicles with adap-
tive equipment, but most arc
being held back because devel-
opment of adequate equipment
has been slow and devices are
expensive, said Dr. Rodger J.
Koppa, head of TTI’s Human
Factors Division.
Koppa said small cars make
it much harder for a wheel-
chair user to get in the car and
take the wheelchair along.
The TTI engineer says that
development of a special pur-
pose body on a front-wheel
drive vehicle that incorporates
a wheelchair and driver entry
as integral parts of the design is
needed. Development of a bet-
ter driver restraint, which pro-
vides stability at the controls
and crash protection, is also a
necessity.
TTI is a part of the Texas
A&M University System.
Easy Clean-Up A
Opticians recommend clean-UP'
ing eyeglasses with soap and
warm water periodically. This
removes accumulated oil from
the skin. Rinse and polish with
a soft cloth or tissue paper.

arrangement of white daisies,
peach carnations and baby’s
breath. Pictures reminiscent of
the couple’s married life served
as topics of conversation as did
significant memories furnished
by the guests. Robert Daniel, a
nephew, took pictures, and

CAREFUL BRAKING
Go easy on those brakes
and save twice. Careful
braking will save you the
cost of buying new linings
prematurely, and will also
save gasoline. Watch what’s
coming up as you drive so
you can let the car coast to
nearly a full stop instead of
jamming on the brakes at
the last moment.
Mrs. Harold (Billie) Woodard,
sister of the honoree, played
organ music. Mr. and Mrs.
Larry Hill assisted with serv-
ing; and Rev. Frank Johnson,
pastor of Kelview Heights Bap-
tist Church, offered a prayer.
The Dunns lived in Coleman
until 1949; moved to Midland in
1949, to Abilene iiL.1951 and
back to Midland in 1957. Mr.
Dunn served in the U. S. Air
Force from November 4, 1942
until September 5, 1945, serv-
ing in Italy. After his discharge,
he joined the Texas Depart-
ment of Public Safety as a
Drivers License Examiner in
1949. In 1957 he was promoted
to the post of Adjutant of
Region 4 and transferred to
DPS Regional Hdq. in Mid-
land. He retired in August,
1980, after 31 years with the
Department, and joined the
staff of Kelview Heights Bap-
tist Church as assistant to the
pastor. However, before he
accepted this, post, he and Mrs.
Dfann went on a Caribbean
toiir, a retirement gift from
their children. The Dunns are
longtime members of Kelview
Heights Baptist Church.
Mr. Dunn is the son of the
late G. H. and Sarah Shamblin
Dunn, longtime Coleman resi-
dents. All of his brothers and
sisters attended the reception,
including Cleo Dunn, Mrs. Bai-
ley (Velma) Helton, Mrs. A. C.
(Doris) Tillman, Rev. Raymond
Dunn, all of Coleman, and
George H. Dunn Jr. of Irving.
Mrs. Dunn, the former Opal
Jackson, is the daughter of the
late John Will Jackson and Mrs.
Bessie Ray Jackson of Coleman.
Mrs. Jackson attended the re-
ception along with three of Mrs.
Dunn’s sisters, Gwen Jackson,
Mrs. Raymond Dunn, both of
Coleman, and Mrs. Harold (Bill-
ie) Woodard of Odessa.
The two sons of the celebra-
ting couple and their families
attended the reception. They
are Jerry and Deanna Dunn,
Kirk and Kristen, and Eddie
