On the occasion ot six near misses
from an enemy bom dir which
drove the hoat ashore and forced
the crew (o leave the hstp. Although
enemy planes were still overhead,
Sgt White boldly swam out to the
abandoned craft, assisted In moving
It from the dangerous surf, aiid an-
chored the vessel in safe waters,
Subsequently when the Onat was
grounded on the reef and was be-
ing destroyed by pounding surf, he
courageously went overboard In
shark-infested waters and worked
intermittently under water for 45
minutes repairing, fhe damaged pro-
peller As a result of his work the
ship was able to continue yltal
patrol, tn reconalssance and sup-
ply operations Through his Inspir-
ing courage. Initiative and devotion
to duty, Sgt White, at the risk of
his life, rendered invaluable service
to the gallant defense forces of the
Philippine Islands

and again, (luring the three years
he was a prisoner of war, in secur-
ing food for his commanding offi-
cer, who was seriously 111 : 1

Work has been resumed on the
two-story brick building being erec-
ted at the corner of Live Oak and
Concho by Dr. Jane L. Johnson.
Dr Johnson states that she does
not know exactly when the struc-
ture wlU be completed, but indicates
the weather will have considerable
to do with that..

Gene Russell Member
Of Swing Band At
John Tarleton College
Gene Russell of Coleman, a fresh-
man at John Tarleton Agricultural
college, Stephenvllle, Is a member
of the Tarleton Swing Cadets, the
colleges' swing band Russell, who
plays the trumpet. Is a pre-law
major.
The Swing Cadets, aside from
playing for campus activities, has a
weekly radio program over radio
Station KORC, Mineral Wells. The
program may be heard each Satur-
day afternoqn at 5:30.

Mrs. Larance Witt from Kermlt
visited from Monday until Sunday

Mrs Frank Sanders spent most
of last week with her daughter,

na, Mrs, Davis has been 111 but Is
better.

TBgt. Curtis H. Whatley, was re-
cently awarded the Army Commen-
dation Ribbon. The award given for
Whatley has been In the army
four arid one-half yean.
After his arrival overseas in
April 1945. he served with the 910th
Anti-Aircraft Battalion, the 390th
AAA Battalion and other anti-
aircraft units In April 194*. he
waa assigned to the 10th Constab-
ulary Regiment
