S-A Tennis Tourney
If you were plagued by
'‘tennis fever" this past
weekend and were trying
to find a court to cool down
in Coleman%County, you
were just plain out of luck.
Some 18 teams, 232 high
school players participated
in the Santa Anna tennis
tourney on Friday and
Saturday with four titles
at stake. Thanks to a
thunderstorm late Satur-
day afternoon, final round
play spilled over to Mon-
day afternoon.
Tourney director R. C.
Smith of Santa Anna sta-
ted that 15 courts were
utilized in Santa Anna,
Coleman and Mozelle.
Smith, with a lot of help
from his friends, did his
usual fine job in running off
the tourney without a
hitch.
Of local interest in the
finals, No. 2 seeded Paulie
Vasquez-Tommy DeLeon
of Santa Anna defeated
No. 1 seeds McCord Wil-
son-Greg Martin of Cole-
man on Monday afternoon
in a tough doubles tennis
match J-7, 8-4, 64v
DeLeon, along with
doubles partner, Junior
Salazar, captured the Class
A state tennis title last
year. Paulie Vasquez team-
ed up with Mike .Hartman
of Santa Anna and were
defeated by DeLeon-Sala-
zar in that title match.
On the other hand, Mar-
tin and Wilson were de-
feated, at Austin in 1982 by
the Whitehouse doubles
team in the first round of
Class 3A competition.
In boys’ singles, the
Mountaineers Junior Vas-
quez reached the semi-
final round and was de-
feated by Johnston of
Junction, 6-3, 6-1. The
finals were played in Junc-
tion on Monday between
players from that school,
Johnston and Bradshaw.
Results were not available.
In girls’ doublejkaction,
No. 2 seeded-Aetfsta-Jones
of Ballinger defeated the
No. 1 seeds, Heap and Rose
of Junction in the finals,
6-4,6-1. Jeanene Jones and
Sherry Gunter of Santa
Anna reached the quarter-
finals but were defeated by
Elliott-Tucker of Baird,
