Safeway Outlines
Proposal to Unions
Retail Clerks International Asso-
ciation Local Union No. 368 is now
in negotiation with Safeway Stores,
Incorporated for a new agreement
for retail clerk employees in Jacks-
boro. The Retail Clerks Union has
received an offer from Safeway
Stores for new and improved bene-
fits and increased wages.
Retail clerks have been offered a
substantial wage increase. A heavy
duty top clerk has been offered an
increase of 12ft per hour retroactive
to the expiration date of the cur-
rent contract, a top rate of $2.44.
Top light duty clerks have been
offered an increase of 134 per hour
at a top rate of $2.12 per hour re-
troactive to the expiration date of
the current contract. Produce de-
partment managers have been of-
fered an increase of 10^ per hour
retroactive to the expiration date
of the current contract .
These rates will increase again
in April, 1968, October, 1968, April,
1969, and October , 1969.
During the term of the three year
agreement this will bring the top
heavy duty clerk up to $2.62 per
hour and the top light duty clerk
to $2.30 per hour and the produce
ranagers in a range from $2.70 to
$2.88 per hour.
Birthday has been added as an
additional holiday for full time em-
ployees.
Additional contributions have
been offered to be paid into the
Health and Welfare plan increasing
the premium from $21 to $25 per
month per eligible employee during
the life of this agreement.
Effective September 1,1969, Safe-
way has agreed to participate in a
Union-Employer Pension Program,
amounting to 8^ per hour per eli-
gible employee.
Improvements have been offered
in job security through improved
language in the seniority provision
of the contract.
Safeway has offered a ten cents
per hour premium over the newly
negotiated rate for hours worked
between store closing time and
a.m.
Four weeks of vacation have been
offered effective 1-1-68 to employ-
ees who have 18 years or more of
service.
