ter of fact, pay all taxes. However

“Jf you own a farm bold it in
your possession as long as you live"
says Maxwell’s Talismau. This
is good advice, a good intreaty aud
a proper demand. Hold on to your
farm, and if you have not one, get
one and hold to it.
The editor sent some post cards,
scenes on Los creek, to a friend in
Dallas and asked him how he liked
our country printing. His reply
was: "Your samples of country
printiug are all right in every re-
spect. We do not see how you
.can run a newspaper when there
is such good fishing as that seems
to be near Jacksboro.”
Again the News wishes to warn
its readers against street and trav-
ling fakirs. It is much better to
buy from people who have a char-
acter to maintain and not from
those who are here today and there
tomorrow.
Have the wood haulers gone
into a trust?—Albany News.
No. You don't expect a man to
cut wood all da)% take it to town
and sell it for $2 oo, when he can
make from three to five dollars a
day picking cotton, do yon? Re-
member the fable of the ant and
get your wood in the summer.

A gentleman in Chicago writes
and asks if the reports in the News
about the Jack county cotton crop
are not intended as jokes. There
is no joke about it but solid facts.
If conservative men are not mista-
ken in their estimates there will be
many farms in Jack county that
will make over a bale to the acre
and a few will closely crowd two
bales.

“I suppose.*’ said the old-time friend,
“that your folks no longer feel the
anxiety about social matters that they
once experienced.”
“Yes, they do,” answered Mr. Cum

ciety ns they once were gettln’

Up in 'Casey, Illinois, a negro
used some insulting language to1
a white girl. The report got out
and as it traveled it was magnified'
until nearly the whole town was
collected like a mob. The officers
got the negro away. The people
then gave notice to all negroes to
leave, which they did in a hurry.
The only thing for the negro is to
stay at home in the South and be
have himself. <
In our large cities there are
thousands of people living in a
state of wretched poverty. They
can barely get enough work to sus-
tain life, yet in the farming dis-
tricts of the South and West there
as a severe demand for labor at good
wages. A New Yorker took a
thousand men from the congested
poor district of his city to Florida
where they could earn $1.50 a day
while board could be had at 30
cents a day. With a very few
exceptions the.men drifted back to
their old haunts as soon as they
earned euough to carry them
Habit is about the strongest thing
in human nature.
Anyway, there is hardly any hope
of it coming to Jacksboro and it
will hurt us severely either direc-
tion it goes. Oran will make a
goed town which will draw Jacks-
boro trade ^om the south part of
the County. Two routes*have been
Surveyed, one to Graham and one
to Cbrystal Falls. Graham is
more directly on the route it wishes
to go and it will probably go that
way.

There never was a political
economist who did not hold that
that country was the most prosper-
ous and happy where the wealth of
the country was the most evenly
distributed among the people.
Where large fortunes are held by
few persons there are always many
paupers. Concentrated wealth is
necessary to carry on great enter-
prises but this can be done by
stock companies as well as
individuals. So laws that tend
to check tremendous accumu-
lations of wealth by the in-
dividual are laws that should be
enacted and enforced. The gradu-
ated income tax advocated by both
Bryan and Roozevelt is such a law,-
but there is small hopes of it pass-
ing with leaders of both parties
•gainst the measure.
Mr. Bently called at the Rock
Island office in Fort Worth on his
last trip to see if he could get the
road to haul seed, fertilizer, etc
free for the demonstration farm.
While talking to the general
freight agent Col. Hovey and a
number of big people from the
north came np and Mr. Bentty
made known his wishes and at the
same time showed them a clipping
from the News concerning the cot-
ton on the county farm. Col.
Hovey said that "If Jack county
learned to raise more cotton than
it does we would have to double
track the road to haul it off. But,
go ahead, the Rock Island will haul
free anything you want for your
demonstration farm."
Another Jacksboro Enterprise.
Mr. Wm. Shaw has bought a set
of concrete machinery and it will
be set up and in running order in
about 30 days.
The material of concrete block
manufacture is plentiful and con-
venient and there is no reason why
the business could not grow until
there would be a large establish-
ment. Mr. Shaw has already ex-
perimeued with the material and the
blocks are perfect. A number of
them are on exhibit at the First
National Bank.
It will not be long until other
enterprises will begin that can use
our abundance of raw material.
The limestone here makes the very
best lime and there is abundance of
rock for cement manufacture.
These enterprises will surely come
in time.
Transportation facilities are at
present somewhat of a drawback as
we have only one railroad to move
our products
