A new educational pro-
gram called Content Mas-
tery will be implemented in
Jacksboro Elementary and
John R. Lowrance Middle
Schools this year. Content
Mastery Centers will be used
for those students with iden-
tified learning disabilities to
succeed in their mainstream
(regluar) classes. Any eli-
gible special education stu-
dent may leave his of her
classroom and go to the Con-
tent Mastery Center when
independent students work
such as written assign-
ments, reading assign-
ments, studying for a test, or
taking a test is being done.
The student will not miss the
regular teacher's lecture,
class discussion, group work,
lab or special presentations.
Content Mastery Pro-
grams are being developed
state-wide as a by-product of
the many reforms that were
mandated with the approval
of House Bill 72. Jacksboro
schools are starting the pro-
gram with math and Lan-
guage Arts and will broaden
out to other subject areas.
The underlying principles
of this program state that
special education students
can learn and succeed better
when the regular and special
education teachers work and
plan together extensively.
This very positive program
helps students increase their
achievement levels by in-
cluding them in regular
classroom instruction with
their peers and them allow-
ing them to receive support
by the teacher trained in
Learning Disabilities.
The entire staff of JISD
received In-Service training
this year from Sue Niheiser
of Region IX Education Serv-
ice Center in Wichita Falls.

Billy Charles
Billy Ed and Charles welcome the
opportunity to service
Ms. Niheiser conducted ses-
sions that explained the
Content Mastery Concept
and introduced techniques
used in Content Master that
are useful for all students
such as test adaptation,
modifying materials, teach-
ing strategies, student or-
ganization and study skill.
The Content Mastery staff
in the elementary and
middle school have had ex-
tensive training and experi-
ence in regular and special
education. The years of expe-
rience of the four teachers
total 85 years. They all have
certifications to teach the
Educable Mentally Re-
tarded, Learning Disabled,
Elementary and/or Secon-
dary classes and other en-
dorsements such as Early
Childhood. These teachers
and their specially trained
teacher's aides have taught
in a variety of school includ-
ing mainstream classes such
as Secondary English, 4th
grade, Resource Classes,
Classes for Trainable Men-
tally Retarded, Gifted and
Talented, and Classes for the
Perceptually Handicapped.
The regular classroom
teachers are very supportive
of the CMC staff and our
school are enthusiastic
about the new program
The Content Mastery
Centers will offer a variety of
services to the students and
teaches. They include:
1. taped textbooks.
2. highlighted textbooks.
3. reading tests to stu-
dents and/or assisting teach-
ers with test adaption.
4. helping with packets,
worksheets, written assign-
ments, and/or anything in-
volving textbooks.
5. study groups for exams.
6. discussing individual
stdents' strengths and weak-
nesses.
7. monitoring student
progress and placement.
8. aiding in student or-
ganization.
9. vocabulary files for
mainstreamed courses.
10. supplementary mate-
rial for courses, such as maps
to practice labeling.
11. modified materials.
12. test taking skills.
13. strategies which de-
velop "study skill independ-
ence."
14. computerized reviews
for exams.
15. assistance with home-
work through reteaching
and guided practice.

ices available, JES and
JRLMS are looking forward
to seeing students succeed in
