Indelible memories of a deputy’s death
WHEN MY FATHER (Sheriffs Deputy Corky
Guthnei was killed in the hoe of duty in 1980, The
Canadian Record, published photographs showing
my father lying on the ground with blood all over
ban and gun shot wounds on his cheat If this wasn't
enough. The Record also put a photograph of the
blond-stained interior of the car, along with photos
of the shot up windshield. The Canadian Recced
wasn't content to do this just once, bod repeatedly
year after year on the anniversary of my father's
death
You will never xnow how this hurt tcrj family and
I to see these photos, not once, but over and over.
I was only twelve year* old when my father was
murdered Thanks to "The Canadian Record," the
last memory I have of my faLheT is the pwture of him
lying on the bloody ground with gun shot wounds to
The latest on campaign
finance reform from Granny D
THE CAMPAIGN FINANCE reform bdJ passed by the Senate in
May is finaBy coming before the U.S House of Representatives on July
11’ and 13. The Houae venson is called the Shays-Meehan ML named
far its Houae sponsor*, but it ia eaaeatatty the senates
McCain- Fetngnld tall In a nutshell it would outlaw the huge donation*
bong made to pohticsl campaigns by corporations, muons and by very
wealthy people
There are laws already m place—reaffirmed by the Supreme Court
at recently as two weeks ago—to taut thenar of contributions, so that
the potential for government corruption wifi be mmmoed However,
there m presently nothing to slop a bdhonaire or a special interest
group or corporation from giving million* to a political party, with the
understanding that the money wifi be fimneied to particular eamh
date* The money given to parties is supposed to be wed far "get out
the vote’ campaign* and far general “party budding" activities but
<12% ends up in candidate campaigns So it ia a giant loophole that (fa-
feats the purpose of campaign donation limits
The Shay* Meehan bdl will outlaw such contribution* which will re-
turn our democracy to the human scale and get nd of the "Lutcoln Bed
room" shame that has poisoned both partita.
Naturally, the member! of the UA Houae of Representatives who
receive Una kind of money are not happy about voting for the bdL They
have put up a phony venuoa. sponsored by Bob Ney of Ohm. and they
will hkeiy try afi kinds of kilter amendment* to defeat real reform.
Democrats and asember* of the Cnngruwnnnal Black Caucus who were
pro-reform fast yum are wavering that year, forgetting that Bifi
Chntea ■ not atifl out there rafamg Out load of money for them—he has
no bedrooms to rent or pubht policy la aeft
We onhnary American* must, today and this week, maiac that tins
reform be passed without delay and without afi the monkey buameas aa
usuaL I have called my Congressman and I urge all my fellow atoms
todokkewfae.
Last year I walked from Cakforasa to Washington DC at the age of
90 to promote the need for this reform Oh, 1 would hate to have todo *
again because the bifi failed at the bat numfte! I think if we afi call our
Representatives it may pass, and we the people ought then breathe a
sigh of ratal Aa it ia now, moot of the Representatives dost think the
people care shout this fame, and they therefore fed free to continue the
as they please We must fat them know
I simply cannot understand why Hie Canadian
Record find* it necessary to publish these type* of
photographs in their publication Would it not be
more appropriate to show the photo* of the bun
dred* of hn fellow officer* paying their respects?
Why must you disrespect the life of an officer and in-
flict more grief on the families just for a few shock-
ing and inappropriate picture*
In last week * paper, you stated that we should be
angry that Officer Graham was alone Well the
.Sheriffs office would be more than happy to be able
to provide the kind of coverage you want However,
you did not My kow they could fund it. Also officer*
do not always have time to wad for back up It's easy
to try to And fault in hindsight The letters to you
wete not even bringing this up as an issue. At issue
were the photograph* you chose to publish.
You seem to be trying to shift the blame to any-
one but younetf As you Mate, “when I wrote those
reports and chose those photos—one of which. 1
knew, could both anger and offend" you were fully
aware of the angumh these would cause. You obvi-
ously put the story ahead of the families and
Shame on you
I AM AMAZED at your total disregard for the feel-
mga of Deputy Graham s family Knowing full wefl
the photo of the sheet-covered body lying beside a
blood spattered pick-up aught upset some reader*,
you go ahead and inckufa d.
This picture <hd not add to the story which was
graphic enough m detail With nine photos available,
tfas one psrture could and should have been omitted
With the indusum of this one photo you have effec
trvely reduced your coverage of tins tragedy into
I do agree that we should be angered and of
fended Not with just the death of an officer, but also
of the blatant dis,e*pect of the man and hi* family
shown by you and your paper
I am so sorry that the Graham family baa to go
through the same *hock and inckgiuties that my fam
3y went through because of your paper It has been
twenty-one years ' July 12th) since your paper first
ran the photos of my father But it seem* like yester-
day. And the images you forced me will never
go away.
I pray to the Lard above that nothing like this
ever happens again ai Canadian But if it does, I pray
you gain the wiadosn and thoughtftdness t» not again
publish suck distasteful and disiMpectful photos for
the sake of a story
