Wildcats shut-out Skyrockets as
District 6-2A playoff race heats up
The Wildcat* shored up their
District 6-2A standing and notched
another needed victory Friday
night against the Wellington Sky-
rockets, in a game that felt—de-
spite a decisive 26-0 final
score—for the most part, flatter
than a pancake. The Cats, now 3-1
in District play and in the running
for a playoff shot, will have to heat
up the griddle and add some sizzle
this week. They face a talented
Panhandle squad and arguably the
toughest part of their schedule
with the Spearman Lynx (still un-
defeated in District and ranked in
the State top ten) and Sunray Bob-
cats (also 3-1 and fresh from an up-
set over West Texas last week) in
the warming oven.
Friday’s Wildcat win was not
without its moments. Clint Miller's
punt block and Lance Gray's scoop
and score from the Rockets' 15
spiced things up in the second
quarter. Jay English, who is prov-
ing to be a potent weapon for the
Wildcat offense, ran for 140 yards
on 16 carries and launched his scor-
ing blast from the 47-yard line in
the first quarter.
Those performances stirred the
pot and roused the crowd, earning
Player of the Week honors for
English on Offense, and Miller,
who along with Sergio Lopez was
tapped for Defensive honors, and
also earned Wildcat head coach
Ronny Williams' pick for Special
Teams standout Miller had three
solo tackles and seven assists (and
picked up the final touchdown at
the other end of the ball), while
Lopez posted three solo tackles
and a pick.
The Cats crossed the goalline in
each quarter while gobbling up 272
of 284 total yards on the ground
and holding the Rockets to just 140
total yards. In addition to Jay Eng-
lish’ 47-yard scoring run in the
first, and Lance Gray’s blocked

Jay English (#33) crosses the goal line with the ball as he is pulled oul of bounds, but the officials spot it
at the I-yard line, where quarterback Riley Monts holds on for the touchdown
punt recovery and 15-yard touch-
down in the second. Riley Morns
punched a quarterback keeper
across from the 1-yard mark in the
third, and Miller earned it across in
the fourth All Morales was 2-for-2
on PATs, while both of the Cats’
2-point attempts failed
With a punt block, a pick and a
fumble recovery to its credit the
defense kept the sparkle in the
game. -The defense responded
well to turnovers,” Williams said.
That was a bright spot for us in
the game. At halftime, we had just
one score offensively We were just
playing out of synch”
Utilizing some bait and switch
tactics, the Wellington defense
“jumped around quite a bit giving
us different looks,” Williams said,
“and we just were not executing
like we needed to.”
“We had some good plays in
there," he added, noting in particu-
lar English' 46-yard touchdown be-
hind well-placed blocks from his
teammates. That one worked just
like you draw it up, but we just did-
n’t do it enough”
Wildcat quarterback Moms
completed only l-of-10 passes Fri-
day for 12 yards—a sut that does
not reflect the fact that moat of
those were still on target That's
nine plays that you're not getting
anything out of, though,” Williams
said, adding that the Rocket de-
fense kept the heat on up front
forcing Morris to throw quickly,
lad he put it where he needed
to—we just didn't catch*.”
The win knotted the Cab In a
three-way tie for the District’s #2
spot, with undefeated Spearman

The Panhandle Panthers put a 684)
whoopmg on Highland Park Satur-
day night at Amarillo's Dick Bmns
Stadium, setting the stage for this
week's skirmish with Canadian.
Both the Panthers and Cab are
3-1 going into Friday’s game at
Panhandle. ’This will be one of our
toughest games,” Williams said,
looking ahead. ‘The Panthers are
talented, with really good skill peo-
ple They play two quarterbacks,
and their offense varies from a con-
ventional running game to a
no-huddle set lt’a not real compli-
cated. but they do a lot of things
right"
Players to watch on offense are
Delt Cockrell, a regional sprint
champion who scored on a 17-yard
pass last week, and Brock
Sherwood, who played both run-
ning back, quarterback and safety
in last week's game, rushing for
1 OK-yards and s touchdown, and
passing for 56 yards and another
scare. Quarterback Harley Foster
scored on I- and 3-yard nu»
against HP, and tossed a 6-yard
TD pass to Shane Skiver in addi
tam to the 17-yard strike to
Cockrell.
Sy Slover blocked a punt inter
cepted a pass and returned it 41
yards for a TD. made nine tackles
at linebacker and was a key blocker
in Friday night's victory
Coming into Friday night the
Panthers have averaged 337.4 total
yards per game on offense (com-
pared to Canadian's 372.7), and
have held their opponents to an av-
erage 226.4 yank per game (com-
pared to the Wildcat D's 171.5)
Panhandle operates a
gaj>-control defense. Williams said.
"It's very sound, and they play
good technique They are not
overly powerful physically, but we
will have to block a whole lot better
to move the football this week We
can do that”
