Immunization rules to be enforced for Texas children
✓
The Texas Department of Health
(TDH) is notifying all school and
child-care facility administrators
that new, more stringent immuni-
zation rules for all Texas children
will become law effective Septem-
ber 1.
Health officials are advising par
ents to ensure that their children’s
immunization records comply w ith
those rules. Still more changes in
the immunization requirements, in-
cluding a mandatory second dose
of measles vaccine, are set for
1991.
Wes Hodgson, epidemiology
coordinator for the TDH Immuni-
zation Division, said, “The large
measles outbreaks which began in
1988 tinderscored the fact that
measles and other vaccine-
preventable diseases can pose trag-
ic health threats unless all suscept-
ible people are immunized against
them.”
“Some parents in recent years
have failed to have their children
vaccinated. Also, some school and
day-care operators have not kept
adequate records. The result is a
growing number of insufficiently
immunized children and young
adults at risk of measles infection,”
Hodgson said.
Hodgson said that currently the
law requires all children entering
Texas schools or day-care to show
proof of immunization at certain
ages against polio, tetanus,
measles, rubella (German
measles), mumps and diphtheria.
In addition, the law requires per-
tussis (whooping cough) vaccine
for all school and day-care children
younger than 5.
childrep and students enrolling in
Texas child-care facilities or
schools must have received both
mumps and measles vaccines on or
after their first birthdays.
However, amendments adopted
by the Texas Board of Health in
June more sharply define, and in
some cases change, children’s im-
munization requirements. Among
the major amendments are:
^Beginning September I, 1990,
*Beginning Jan. 1, 1991, stu-
dents whose 12th birthdays occur
on or after Sept. 1, 1990 will be
required to have two doses of
measles vaccine, or provide evi-
dence of measles immunity. The
two doses must be administered at
least 30 days apart, and proof of
the second dose will not be re-
quired until the child’s 12th
birthday.
*Beginning September I,' 1991,
Haemophilus influenzae type b
(Hib) vaccine will be required for
children age 18 months through
four.
♦Beginning Sept. 1,. 1991 all
children and students enrolling for
the first time must have received
rubella vaccine at age I or older.
Hodgson added that persons
needing further details about im-
munization requirements should
consult their family physicians, lo-
cal health departments or school
officials.
Courthouse restoration volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed as the
.ourthouse restoration draws near
completion. The restoration com-
mittee met Wednesday to discuss
and prepare the final details.
After receiving a painting bid of
over $2000., the committee would
like to ask the community for as-
sistance in completeing these last
projects and saving the contingen-
cy fund for the bigger projects,
such as carpeting, curbs, side-
walks, electricity hook-ups for the
street lamps and cabinets for the
offices.
Vic Vreeland and six or seven
others have offered to paint the
District Courtroom, but we
could use more volunteers in other
areas Nan Olsen said.
There are more offices to paint
and we would like to refurbish the
old hall benches and build some
new ones for the second and third
floors, Ms. Olsen said. The land-
scaping could also use some com-
munity effort, she told the
committee.
Project manager, Brett Barr
agreed that involving the commu-
nity would not only save money but
also bring the county residents a lit-
tle closer to the project.
Barr estimates construction wor-
kers to be finished sometime in De-
cember. Ms. Olsen hopes to have
volunteer workers coordinated into
specific areas and ready to step in
at that time to complete the project.
The committee is also request-
ing photos, artifacts and political
bottons or posters from area elec-
tions of the past, for future display
in the courthouse.
For more information on volun-
teering for the courthouse restora-
tion, call County Court at Law
Judge Bob Reyes’s office at
321-9228.
