THE GREAT ADVENTURE
By JAMES MARLOW
WASHINGTON. €)ct 17—<cT»,—
j let e we go >>n the gie.il adven-
ture.
Dit-ilv mkin now the gn- eminent
will have taken nil wage controls
ind most ol ns price controls.
Trt*i M last we'll be back m
that iree economy—that free en-
terprise - which busines m e n
11' called for since the war end-
ed.
And right there the great adven-
ture begins.
These next five or ten or
twenty years may be the most
important in the history ol the
United Slates.
They may. in fact, decide
whether free enterprise is to
continue to be the way of life
in this country.
For il after a decade or two ol
prosperous tree enterprise w,
crash into depression— because
free enterprise failed to keep li-
mit of depression.....what then.’
The possibility of socialism or
tascism in this country seem.- re-
mote now, perhaps absurd.
But no one at Ibis minute .....
when America seems to be eniei
mg upon a rich and success!ul
ci. can sec how much liberty the
pc,,pic might be willing to yield
it they became jobless, hungry and
hopeless in depression
We hare been raised on the tra-
dition that free enterprise, by f «■*■
men. has made this eountry neat
and will continue to keep it that
way.
We had such lac enterprise lie
fore the war. Then the war cam
and, up until now. the government
told business what prices it could
charge and labor what wages it
could a t. Now this is ending.
So ws start out again upon
free enterprise but in a world
where socialism — the opposite
of free enterprise — is far
stronger than it was before the
war, and more widespread.
• Socialism i government own-

goods, like coal mines, aviation,

Russian communism — which is
socialism in extreme form bec.oi-e
it is a dictatorship with govern-
ment owneislnp ol practically
everything — is far more powerful

But social;, in hg . pieatl to

tree enterprise, although in much
m iber form than in Russia. In
