ROOT OF THE TROUBLE — These two cornstalks, held by
Joyce Chandler, of Columbia, Mo., were taken from fields where
the Missouri Farmers Association is conducting experiments in
the use of soil insecticides. The stalk on the left suffered root-
worm damage, while the stalk on the right, from a row treated
with aldrin, had a healthy root system and no rootworm damage.

Snow and ice can work up under shingles, whether
wood, composition or slate. Then when it thaws,
water drips through, rots the roof planking and before
long you have a leaky roof that costs you money to,
repair. Don't wait until the damage is done. Check
it for any needed repairs. We have any kind of
roofing material you may wish, if is is found you
need a new roof.

EVERY HIGHWAY IS
PASSABLE: but DANGEROUS"
*
r *. ’ ri'

. •' : \ ,
Such a warning is not alone for a road under construction or repair.
It’s any road—it’s every road. *
The “open road” is engineered for safety. Its curves, grades, over and
under passes, and road markings are all designed for you to drive and live.
But every road can be as safe or as dangerous as you and millions of other
drivers make it. It’s how you drive, how you respect road controls, speed
limits, stop signs; how you think when you drive and how you use or mis-
use the courtesy of the road that determines the degree of safety or danger.
Since the end of the war, rural highway deaths have climbed until they
account for three-quarters of the toll in dead and injured. In 1952, 28,200
deaths out of a total of 38,000!
Three of every four accidents occurred in clear weather on dry roads.
Eighty percent of vehicles involved in fatal accidents were traveling
straight ahead.
These are stark facts which put the terrific highway carnage straight
up to the driver behind the wheel. A reckless, lawless attitude makes safe
highways dangerous.
Ask yourself, honestly, “Am I a safe, or dangerous driver?”
