WEEKLY REVIEW.
With the exception of Wednesday which was marked by
a cold norther, fair and pleasant weather has hiled during
the week. The tides, however, have been unusually low.
and several vessels have been detained at the bar below
by a icaicity of water—the steamer Mexico being unable
to cross at the regular time having had to turn back. The
hsalth of the city is good—no sickness of any ki»d pre-
vailing.
Trade continues brisk and active , the receipts of pro-
duce and merchandise large and full. The streets are
crowded with wagons and the bayou and the harbor with
coastwise shipping and trading boats—receiving and dis-
charging loads of freight. The words “dull times” are no
longer heard in the “talk on ’change,” and the signs in-
dicate that they will be'stricken out of our commercial
vocabulary, or restricted to the sole use of never satisfied
sroakers. The spirit of improvement is still operating with
satis factory progress, and mechanics of every trade have
their hands full.
The last Houston Telegraph has some information about
the crops whkh we give below ;
.<ince the late frost, we have sought inf. rmation from all
parts of the interior as to the effect on the crops. So far
as we can learn, it has been of positive advantage to the
cotton in much of the lower country, checking its farther
top growth, and causing the bolls to open. The result hw
been a considerable increase in the amount gathered by
many of the planters. In sorne instances Ibis increa e lias
brought the crop »*p to very nearly an average, one year
with another. The continued fair weather since the fro-d
has also aided in this reshit, and it is estimated that evU-y
week of fair weather at this time, adds 2000 bales to the
cr..p of Texas. A late killing frost, ami a pleasant fall,
may yet give us a tolerable crop in the aggregate.
The sugar cane will not turn out more than half a croji
The time when it should have been ripening, was required
for its growth. The prospect of a short crop iu Louisiana
gives promise of good prices.

Continued Success of Garibaldi.
FIVE THOPSASD PRISOXERS TAKEN.
St. Johns, N. F., Qet. 21.— By tile nrriva! of
the steamship City of Washington off Cape R icn.
we have Liverpool dates, via Queenstown, to the
11th instanL
The City of Washington prints highly import-
ant and interestinsr tie tails of a "rent battle fought
on the river Vo turno, in tjie Kingdom n| Naples,
between Garibaldi’s forts?;* ani the Neapolitan
troops.
The reports of the ba'tle Ray that the Neapo-
litans. estimated at 30,000 str<»ng. attacked the
Garibaldians tirst, under a thick mi-*r. and thus
pemporarity drove back the Garibaldians, with
about half their number, after a desperate Yiglit
of eijrht hours duration— Gari'oaldi heiutr forward,
pistr.l in hand, cheeriiijf on his men.' The Nea-
politans were broke , routed and pursued close
to the walls of Capua.
A brigade of Germans was cut off from the
main body of the Neapo.itaus and driven to the
mountains.
The Garibaldians took 5000 prisoners. If was
estimated that the Neapolitans had 3000 killed
and wounded. The loss to the Garibaldians .was
j between 1200 and 2000.
| The Royalists made a sortie from Capua to
rescue the German brigade, but were repu <-d.
The Khg of Napes and his brothers we re-
present at L: v battle.
A report was cf.i«.nt that Capua had sur-
; rendered, and another that the bombardment
j before that city was progressing. These state-
I menus, however, lack confirmation,
j Tae lino of the Vclluroo was still strong!-.-
j protected. It is said that the Neapolitan were
| prepared to d I heir posit io «*.
G - ribaidi has asked tin* Knur of Sardinia ;o go
to Nap!- s and send hint 7.000 men imineiiiaU-iv.
It is repotted that three of too Great K r .le-
