AUSTIN — The Howard Payne Yel-
low Jackets continued their stellar
pitching performances of late en
route to a third straight American
Southwest Conference baseball
victory, 1-0 over No. 16 Concordia
Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets (14-13,11-11)
limited second-place LeTourneau to
one run on four hits over 15 innings
in a doubleheader sweep this past
Saturday.
Friday night against ASC leader
Concordia (21-7, 16-5), Matthew
Parks tossed a complete-game,
eight-hit shutout for the Yel-
low Jackets. Parks struck out six,
walked five and left 11 base runners
stranded.
Howard Payne managed only
four hits off Scott Weinschenk, who
struck out 12 and walked three,
still the Yellow Jackets were able to
scratch across the game’s only run
in the top of the ninth inning.
The HPU ninth began with a lead-
off single to right-center field by
Kyle Kulczyk. C.J Schumann came
on to pinch run for Kulczyk and
moved to second base on a sacrifice
bunt by Will Roberts.
With one out, Jake Sadler ripped
an RBI single up the middle that
plated Schumann with the only run.
Roberts also contributed a
second-inning single while Colton
Brown singled in the eighth to
account for the other two Yellow
Jacket base hits.
HPU moved into a tie with Sul
Ross for sixth place in the ASC
standings with the win, as the top
eight teams advance to the post-
season. The series concludes with a
doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
DISTRICT 8-3A SOFTBALL
SLIMMEST OF MARGINS
Lady Lions edge Lampasas, 2-1, take firm grasp on second place in district standings
BY DERRICK STUCKLY
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
derrick.stuckly@brownwoodbulletin.com
The Brownwood Lady Lions scored in their final at-bat to
knock off the Lampasas Lady Badgers in their initial District
8-3A encounter on March 21, and duplicated that feat in the
rematch Friday night.
The Lady Lions completed a season sweep of Lampasas
and moved into sole possession of second place in district
with only two games remaining thanks to a 2-1 victory.
Missing catcher Tori Burkett all game, losing third base-
man Ashley Jones to an injury during the contest and with
pitcher Alyson Finnigan nursing a sore arm, the Lady Lions
(17-7, 5-3) still managed to secure the victory.
“Our girls came out and battled and knew how important
this game was since they were tied with (Lampasas),” said
Lady Lions head coach Jessica Lynn.
Tied at 1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, Rae-
ann Gongora, filling in for Jones, was hit by a pitch with one
out, then Victoria Sanchez drew a walk. Shelbi Winstead fol-
lowed with a rocket single — one of just six Brownwood hits
against Lampasas (19-6, 4-4) pitcher Sienna Lawson — up
the middle that plated Gongora with the go-ahead run.
“Shelbi’s been doing that all year,” Lynn said. “When we
need a big hit she seems to always come through. It’s nice
to have someone in the seven hole that you can count on to
come up with a big hit any time you need one.”
Finnigan, who fanned 17 batters in the first meeting
against Lampasas, tossed a five-hitter with 14 strikeouts,
one walk and six runners stranded Friday.
In the first inning, Finnigan did not allow a run despite
the first two batters reaching. Then in the third inning, she
struck out the final three batters after the first three had
reached, resulting in Lampasas’s only run.
“Alyson looked like she was struggling a little bit early,
but she battled through it like she always does and found a
way to get outs,” Lynn said.
Finnigan also drove in Brownwood’s first run in the bot-
tom of the first with an RBI single to center field that scored
Gomez, who led off with a single to left. Danyelle Gongora, DERRICK STUCKLY | BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
who was hit by a pitch prior to Finnigan’s at-bat, was tagged Raeann Gongora (5) leaps onto home plate with the decisive run in the Brownwood Lady
out at the plate, limiting the Lady Lions to one run. Lions’ 2-1 victory over Lampasas Friday night.

Lampasas slips
past Lions, 3-2

BROWNWOOD BULLETIN

For the second time in District 8-3A baseball action, the
Brownwood Lions were unable to hold a seventh-inning lead
against Lampasas as the Badgers rallied for a 3-2 victory
Friday night at Morris Southall Field.
The Lions (7-17,1-6) were presented with an opportunity
to potentially move into tie for fourth place in the district
standings with a win, but instead dropped to the bottom of
8-3A with only three league games remaining.
Lampasas (4-14, 2-5) scored three runs in the bottom of
the seventh inning to upend the Lions, 6-5, on March 21,
and put two on the board in the top of the seventh Friday.
The Lions owned a 2-1 lead after six innings thanks to a
two-RBI triple from Seth Owen in the bottom of the fifth.
Owen also went the distance on the mound, allowing one
earned run on two hits with 15 strikeouts and three walks.
In the top of the seventh inning, Levi Geagley drew a
leadoff walk for the Badgers, then Hadley Berry reached on
a dropped third strike. With runners on second and third
and one out, a wild pitch, then a passed ball, allowed both
Geagley and Berry to come home and stake the Badgers to
a one-run lead. Berry scored the decisive run as he knocked
the ball out of Owen’s glove with a slide at the plate.
Lampasas cut Brownwood’s lead to 2-1 in the top of the
sixth as Ryan Baxter reached on a one-out fielder’s choice
that erased Cutter Estep, who walked to start the inning.
With two outs and Baxter on second, Layne Wiggins deliv-
ered an RBI single up the middle.
In the Brownwood fifth, Carson Cloy and Carson McAnally
drew two-out walks off Baxter to extend the frame, which
DERRICK STUCKLY | BROWNWOOD BULLETIN resulted in Owen coming through with the go-ahead hit.
Carson McAnally (3) races for third base and eventually scored on a two-RBI triple by The Lions finished with only four hits off Baxter with the
Seth Owen (background), which accounted for the only runs in the Lions’ 3-2 loss. other three by Cloy, Elijah Salazar and Tristan Chesser.
