be a big part of the community.”
The Gordons added a showroom
and gift shop once they purchased the
business.
“The gift shop has been very good
to us,” Gordon said. “When we opened
the gift shop, I knew I wanted to have
collegiate items along with men’s
stuff.”
Gordon has also expanded Bob’s
Fuels gift shop by setting up booths
inside Peddler’s in Heartland Mall and
Serendipity.
Knowing they couldn’t complete with
Walmart and The Home Depot, the
Gordons did extensive research on dif-
ferent specialty grills and later became
an authorized Holland Grill dealer,
which comes with a written guarantee
that the grill won’t flare up.
“They may cost a little more, but
they are well worth it,” Gordon said. “I
was skeptical at first but that quickly
changed once I saw the response we’ve
gotten from the customers.”
Gordon notes she’s had several cus-
tomers who have driven to Brownwood
just to purchase the Holland Grill.
One of the proudest moments since
purchasing Bob’s Fuel for the Gordons
is being nominated for Marketer of the
Year by the Texas Propane and Gas As-
sociation, which will be named during

the annual conference in August.
“It’s exciting to receive this nomina-
tion from our peers after only three
years in the business,” Gordon said.
The newest addition to the business
is a small snow cone stand that sits at
the entrance of Bob’s Fuels.
“We were in Glen Rose and fre-
quented a snow cone stand there and
learned that one was for sale,” Gordon
said. “The owner used the stand as a
summer job for her daughter. So we
went ahead and bought it.”
The Gordons’ daughter, Beale
Madison Gordon, an Early High School
student, and friend Hanna Sweatman
operate the snow cone stand as their
summer job. The stand features 25
snow cone flavors, cotton candy and
pickles.
“The stand is a good summer job for
them,” Gordon said. “They’re having
fun with it and started selling Kool-aid
pickles, which are very good.”
Over the years, the Gordons have
become a big part of community by
sponsoring and participating in the
Brown County Youth Fair, serving
as members of the Early Chamber
of Commerce and Brownwood Area
Chamber of Commerce and support-
ing all of the local high school annuals.
Gordon also serves as president for the
Early Economic Development board.
“We’re a part of this community so
we like to give back when we can,”
Gordon said. “When you do well for
the kids, they’ll come see you at your
business.”
Bob’s Fuels is located at 1107 W.
Commerce St. and is open from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8
a.m. to noon on Saturday.

“I’ve been very happy with
the response I’ve received,”
Hughes said. “I’ve had
customers tell me they are
so happy I opened because
they felt they had no other
place to go to get their stuff
fixed.”
Hughes moved to Brown-
wood in 1996 after working
in the Arlington area as
an electronic technician.
Hughes and his wife, Lori,
researched several possible
locations before selecting
Brownwood.
“We didn’t want to raise
our children in a big city,”
Hughes said. “We came to
Brownwood one day and
really liked the town.”
Before moving to Brown-
wood, Hughes went to night
school to get his certifica-
tion for air conditioning and
heating repair while he was
still working at his full-time
job.
When he moved to Brown-
wood, Hughes operated his
air conditioning business
from his home, which was
located eight miles north of
Early between Blanket and
May.
Hughes purchased a lot
at 1216 Vine St. in 2008 to
move his air conditioning
business into Brownwood.
Over the next two and a
half years, Hughes worked
on preparing the lot and
building the structure for
his business.
“I built every aspect of
this building,” Hughes said.
“The move has helped my
business grow since I was
more centrally located.”
With the addition of the
small engine repair, Hughes’
air conditioning business
has gained exposure from
the new customers.
“I’m able to shake the
hands of more people,”
Flughes said. “There is
nothing better than hand
shaking in a business. I’ve
been fixing stuff for more
than 30 years. I’ve gained
insight as a technician and
I’m constantly learning to
help grow my business.”
Dan’s Small Engine Repair
is open from 8 a.m. to
4 p.m. Monday through
Friday. For more about the
business, contact Hughes at
