Stranded driver in Big Spring saved by neighbors
BY AMANDA LEIJA
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
amanda.leija@brownwoodbulletin.com
When she left Odessa last Sunday, Leah Mercer didn’t think
she was going to have any problems driving back to Abilene
to drop off her grandmother, Dora Springer.
“Just before getting into Big Spring, I started to notice a few
problems,” Mercer said. “I didn’t want to alarm my grand-
mother so I acted like nothing was wrong.”
Although her vehicle was a 2001, Mercer never had any
problems with it.
“It first started with the cruise control and then the radio
stopped working,” Mercer said. “At that time I had to say
something since we were listening to a playlist I made for the
trip.”
It wasn’t long after the radio went out that loud noises
started emerging from the vehicle and Mercer decided it
was best to pull over to prevent any more damage. Since her
grandmother was a member of AARP, Mercer started to call
roadside assistance.
“I called roadside assistance and they were having a hard
time trying to find a wrecker that would come to me on a
Sunday,” Mercer said.

Shortly after getting off the phone, Mercer called her hus-
band to let him know what happened.
“I felt so helpless because I wasn’t there,” Gary Mercer said.
“Even if I left to head that way, it would take some time to get
there.”
After 45 minutes stranded on the side of Interstate 20, Leah
Mercer noticed a vehicle pulling up behind and she started to
panic at the thought of not knowing who was pulling up. As
she started eyeing the occupants as they exited their car, Leah
Mercer realized she did in fact know the drivers.
“It wasn’t until I saw the second person exit the car that I
realized they were my neighbors,” Leah Mercer said. “You’re
very vulnerable when you’re stranded on the side of the
road.”
Marco and Yesy Sandoval, owners of Common Grounds
Coffee House and Deli, were driving back to Brownwood after
making a trip to Odessa. When they passed the stranded
vehicle, Marco Sandoval quickly recognized Leah Mercer.
“I told my wife I thought that was Leah,” Marco Sandoval
said. “I took the next exit to turn around.”
The Sandovals quickly offered their air-conditioned car for
Leah’s grandmother to rest in while Marco Sandoval worked
on figuring out what to do about Leah Mercer’s car.
“I quickly called my husband to let him know Marco and
Yesy were here,” Leah Mercer said. “He couldn’t believe that
they just happened to be in the area.”
With the help of another good Samaritan who stopped,
Marco Sandoval was able to get Leah Mercer’s vehicle started
and followed her to the nearest auto part store to get a new
alternator. Luckily, the store had the exact alternator needed
for Leah Mercer’s vehicle.
“There’s times when I’ve gone for things at the auto store
and they have to order the part,” Marco Sandoval said. “I was
amazed that they had the exact alternator.”
Leah Mercer was not only amazed by the fact the Sandovals
were in the area, she was grateful that Marco Sandoval was
able to replace the alternator in the parking lot. While Marco
Sandoval has downplayed last Sunday’s events as ‘not a big
deal,’ Leah Mercer has a different opinion.
“It was everything to me,” Leah Mercer said. “It really meant
a lot to me and my husband to know after the ordeal we had
that we would get home safe.”

Good Samaritan Ministries Executive Director Angelia Bostick; Rick Kisko of Prosperity
Bank; Billy Driskill of Hawk Hill Sales; Kurt Newton of Big Country Ford; and Deer Project
team leader Curtis Shults gather around the Massimo UTV that will be raffled off on Sept.
DEER
CONTINUED FROM 1A
According to Bowers,
9,060 pounds of venison
was donated to GSM last
year and it helped feed ap-
proximately 4,530 families.
During 2011, GSM received
11,421 pounds of venison
from hunters in the Brown
County area.
“That 9,060 pounds was
divided into two-pound
chub packs,” Bowers said.
“An average family of four
receives one two-pound
chub and a family can come
in once every 30 days.”
The Deer Project was
started in 2008 as a way for
GSM to partner with hunters
and processors in the area
to provide families in need
with healthy, lean protein.
Hunters are able to drop
of their legally harvested
and tagged deer at any of
the participating proces-
sors, which include Perk’s
Processing in Brownwood,
Lone Star Processing and
Taxidermy in Owens, M&M
Processing in Zephyr and
Santa Anna Custom Process-
ing.
“Our processors have all
agreed to process the meat
at $1 a pound meaning
any dollar amount given
to the project goes a long
way in covering the cost of
processing,” Bowers said.
“We are so thankful to our
processors who have come
on board and support this
project by offering their
services at a greatly reduced
28.
rate.”
To help offset the cost of
the processing, Big Country
Ford, through Hawk Hill
Sales, donated a Massimo
400 4x4 UTV — valued at
$5,000 — to GSM to raffle.
“The UTV has been do-
nated free and clear,” Bow-
ers said. “All the proceeds
raised from the raffle will go
directly to the Deer Project.”
Last year, Big Country
Ford and Hawk Hill Sales
donated a deer blind to
GSM to raffle. Bower said
Thomas Scull from Big
Country Ford wanted to do
something bigger this year
in hopes that it would bring
in more money for the Deer
Project.
“This year, we would like
to collect $15,000 and pro-
cess 15,000 pounds of veni-
son,” Bowers said. “In order
to do that, we are reaching
out not only to our hunters
but to some managed land
ranches, as well.”
Raffle tickets are avail-
able for $10 each or 12 for
$100 and can be purchased
at GSM, Big Country Ford,
Hawk Hill Sales, Porter
Insurance, Citizens National
Bank, Texas Bank, Prosper-
ity Bank in Early and Brown-
wood, Mills County State
Bank and Wendlee Broad-
casting. The drawing for the
UTV will be held Saturday,
Sept. 28 at Big Country Ford.
“We have such an incred-
ible community that sup-
ports us,” Bowers said. “We
couldn’t do it without them.
It’s the donations from our
community that allows us to
continue to help people.”
Anyone interested in
donating to the Deer Project
can stop by GSM, located
at 305 Clark St., to make a
donation in person or mail
it to Good Samaritan Minis-
tries, P.O. Box 1136, Brown-
wood, TX 76804. Donations
can also be made online
at www.goodsambwd.org.
Bowers asks residents who
want their donation to be
used solely for the Deer
Project to make reference
either on the check or dona-
tion form.
