Donated items have been pouring in for the
39th annual Cherry Pie Auction, which will take
place from 9 a.m. to noon today at the Adams
Street Community Center.
The purpose of the auction is to raise funds
for five youth sports programs within Brown-
wood — the Cen-Tex Soccer Association, Brown-
wood Teenage Baseball, Brownwood Freshman
Baseball, the Brownwood Girls Softball Associa-
tion and Soccer for Fun.
The money raised from the event will be di-
vided equally among the five programs.
Named the Cherry Pie Auction due to the
premise of the original event, the auction has
grown to include more than just pies, cakes,
cobblers and other assorted baked goods.
Joining the pastries on this year’s list of
items up for bid are sports memorabilia, books,
watches, glasses, clothing, jackets, food related
items, household related items and vehicle
related items.
Among the most noteworthy items donated
as of Friday were a University of Texas hard hat
autographed by former Brownwood Lion Jaxon
Shipley, courtesy of Raymond Stephens; an
autographed Harlem Globetrotters basketball,
courtesy of the Brownwood Chamber of Com-
merce; and autographed footballs signed by
Dallas Cowboys Tony Romo, Miles Austin and
Jason Witten, courtesy of KOXE.
Kohler has also donated a 60x30 acrylic drop
in bath whirlpool.
As has been the tradition for years, KOXE
radio will again broadcast the event.
Last year, the auction set a record with
$16,882 raised, which split equally among the
organizations resulted in $3,376.40 for each,
according to Brownwood Parks and Recreation
Director David Withers.

in which the driver left his de-
molished vehicle on foot and was
picked up by a friend who drove
him home, law enforcement of-

hearing the license plate number
from the Nissan Altima broad-
cast. Grusendorf said he is famil-
iar with Calvin and the car and
went to Calvin’s home. Calvin
had scrapes and bruises and was
evaluated by Guardian EMS, but
refused treatment, Grusendorf
said.
Hounshell said the car was
traveling eastbound at high
speed when it left the road near
the Giles Trade Lot around 7
p.m., entered the barrow ditch
and went airborne. The car is
believed to have traveled through
the air for about 100 feet and

I’ve always loved music. It has been
so deeply incorporated in my being
that nearly every memory I have is set
to its own soundtrack. Is that strange?
The movements, the notes, crescen-
dos and decrescendos just inspire me.
When I am sad there is a song for that.
When I’m angry, well, this generation
has come up with a million songs for
that. In short there is music for every
mood, situation and event.
I’ve always been amazed at the way
music can bring people together and
bind them in an unspoken bond. This
happened to me on Thursday. I was
having a conversation with someone I
have known for more than half my life
and we started talking about modem
music. Despite the generation gap, we
have very similar taste in current mu-
sic and laughed at the “music” some
people listen to. Before you know it,
you are recommending other groups
you know and it is a great deal of fun.
That being said, as much as I love
music, I am no dancer. I always wished
I could dance but I am very awkward in
my movements and was not endowed
with an ounce of gracefulness. I even
tried drill team and dance groups in
middle school and I must tell you — I
was awful! I learned at dances to just
sway with the beat and try to blend in,

B.J. Carnes would be pleased, his
widow, Jenny, said Friday.
Jenny Cames was present at
the Central Fire Station Friday as
representatives of the Brownwood
Professional Fire Fighters Associa-
tion presented the 2013 B.J. Cames
Memorial Scholarship to aspiring
firefighter Hunter Campbell of Early.
Firefighters presented Campbell,
20, with a $1,000 check. The schol-
arship is intended for individuals
who want to enter the emergency
services profession.
“I think it’s great,” Jenny Carnes
said. “.Anytiling that could help
somebody start a career in the fire
field would be great. This is exactly
what (B.J.) would want.”
B.J. Carnes, a Brownwood firefight-
er, was killed in a July 5, 2008 plane
crash in Coleman County.
Campbell plans to attend Train-
ing Division Boot Camp, a two-week
course in Crowley that will be part
of the yearlong training required to
become a certified firefighter.
Campbell’s father, Kenneth, a
captain with the Early Volunteer
Fire Department, and his mother,
Gretchen, watched as their son
received the scholarship check.
“We knew B.J., so that makes it
even more special,” Gretchen Camp-
bell said.
