July Jubilee
ain't what it
used to be
r I 4ie July 4 weekend—in
X my honest opinion—is
one of, if not the, best time to
be in the Heart of Texas.
1 recall my first trip to the
July Jubilee back in 1995.1
still remember being in awe
that the town actually closed
down half of the square and
held a street dance.
The way the holiday fell
this year fit nicely in the
publication schedule here at
the newspaper. It was nice
to give everyone an honest
holiday without the looming
deadline of getting a paper out
the next day.
We hosted the Smith
family at our house Thursday
Dear Editor:
I am writing not to com-
plain, but to congratulate our
County Commissioners for
their work on the sidewalks
around our Court House.
Judge Neal has worked
long and hard to beautify our
city and the area close to the
center of town. But—there is
more to do, and not j ust on the
sidewalks.
If you have driven around
the courthouse, then you will
know from where I speak.
Going east rounding the
corner the pavement is torn,
pot-holed, and coming apart.
Continuing north and round-
ing that comer the pavement
is coming apart with pot holes
and loose chunks of pave-
ment. Once you have made
the corner and headed north
on Bridge Street it smooths
out and the drive is a lot better.
However just going around
the court house is getting
dangerous and will continue
to get worse if not repaired.
I ride a motorcycle and as
many of you have seen Brady
is hub for motorcycle riders
going through to SanAngelo,
Bro wnwood and points north.
Coming south from those cit-
ies all riders have to navigate
afternoon, and I enjoyed a
belated birthday celebration
complete with good food and
fellowship.
Friday was another day
back at the office, but the
street dance Friday night was
a great opportunity to dust off
the cowboy boots, get out and
socialize and listen to some
great country music.
This is the first time
that both of the kids have
accompanied us to the street
dance. Sam's girlfriend made
it a point to let him know
she would be there, so that
was a foregone conclusion.
Brynn, on the other hand, was
relegated to babysitting duties
around the courthouse one
way or another and it is be-
coming a dangerous situation.
With the amount of heavy
tmck traffic moving through
our city the problem is only
going to worsen.
Now don’t jump on me
about my last statement, I am
not against the trucks. I know
what they have brought to our
city in revenue and business
so I am all for their moving
and going. Repairing and
strengthening South Bridge
Street a few years back was
wise and it is holding up well.
I don’t know who would
have to be contacted to repair
the city streets around the
courthouse, but it sure needs
attention before there is a seri-
ous accident in that vicinity.
I wrote about the railroad
crossing north of town on
North Bridge and wow, it is
a soft crossing now. I don’t
know who did the work but
they did a great job and need
to be congratulated for their
work.
Now, if we can just get
our city streets just as smooth
around the courthouse we will
be in good shape.

until mom realized there were
a bunch of her classmates
there, and it was a good chance
to "socialize."
What transpired over the
next hour or two was my
bouncing back and forth
between dance partners.
Yep—my 15-year-old daughter
is headed down the path to
being a two-stepping talent.
It was the first time daddy
and daughter really made a
considerable effort to scoot
a boot together. Some folks
might not believe it, but I used
to be pretty good on the dance
floor.
I've forgotten all the fancy
swing and jitterbug moves I
used to know, but I'm getting
the feeling that I'm about to get
a refresher course from Holly
via Youtube.
The Stewart Family all but
closed down the street dance
and were back up and at it
for the parade on Saturday.
After dropping Brynn off at
her cheerleader float, as we
headed to the square, Holly
and 1 commented on the large
numbers of parade-goers that
were lining the street.
1 lucked out with a parking
spot and never made it past
Terry Keltz's studio thanks
to all the folks that were
there visiting. It was the pure
definition of what small town
parades are all about.
Once the parade was over,
we headed home for an encore
of backyard laziness and
enjoyed "to go" plates from the
FUMC barbecue.
I'm pretty sure just about
everyone caught a few winks
of a nap during the afternoon.
I grazed on barbecue and
desserts pretty much all
afternoon until we headed out
to the lake for some socializing
and fireworks.
We enjoyed the show then
endured the traffic jam of folks
trying to get back to town. It's
funny how pleasant things are
when you don't stress about
them or get all worked up
about it.
No, not all things over
the weekend were like some
folks wanted. I've heard some
complaints, and even muttered
a complaint or two myself
Letter to the Editor
Don't stop with the sidewalks
(it was hotter than 70°) but
like I will ALWAYS say—if
you want it done your way,
you'd better sign up and get
involved.
I heard a gripe or two
about the fireworks, and there
were some comments on our
Facebook page stating that
things just "aren't like they
used to be." No carnival, no
horse races, yada, yada, yada.
Unfortunately, that is the
exact problem things aren't
the way they used to be. But
in some regards, they are
EXACTLY the way they used
to be. I'll leave it up to you
to figure out if that is good or
bad.
For folks who don't know,
the fireworks cost the Chamber
of Commerce about $10,000
to have on a day that is not
actually July 4. Thankfully,
Cadre Proppants sponsors
half of that, but the other half
is absorbed by the Chamber.
Personally, that is quite a few
memberships they have to sell
to make up for the costs.
Finding a reputable and
quality carnival to come
to town is quite the chore.
Unfortunately, they aren't what
they used to be either.
Having the parade on
Saturday—despite when the
4th actually is—affords people
the chance to make it to Brady
for the weekend. And it also
allows folks from other towns
to take in more than one
parade if they so choose and
allows everyone to actually
plan ahead of time.
So to give credit where
it's due, here is my personal
thanks to anyone who
helped organize and put on
a barbecue, line up or build
a float, patrol a parade route,
set up a stage for a sound
check, hose down a bunch of
volleyball players or simply
wave a flag or patriotic banner
in celebration of Independence
Day. Life in Brady ain't so bad
if you have the right attitude
and perspective.—JS
