County election official allays voter ID concerns
Trustees name
Truelock finalist
for district supt.
By Diane Cosgrove
Anvil Herald Staff
Much confusion has result-
ed from the new Voter ID law
regarding what constitutes
acceptable forms of identifi-
cation in order to vote. Some
people have gone so far as to
say if a person’s ID does not
exactly match their voter reg-
istration card, they will be de-
nied their right to vote.
That statement is incor-
rect. The following is taken
directly from the website of
Texas’ Secretary of State, who
governs how Texas elections
are conducted.
“When a voter arrives at a
polling location, the voter will
be asked to present one of the
seven (7) acceptable forms
of photo ID. Election officials
will now be required by State
law to determine whether the
voter’s name on the identifi-
cation provided matches the
name on the official list of reg-
istered voters (“OLRV”). After
a voter presents their ID, the
election worker will compare
it to the OLRV If the name on
the ID matches the name on
the list of registered voters,
the voter will follow the regu-
lar procedures for voting.
“If the name does not
match exactly but is “sub-
stantially similar” to the
name on the OLRV, the voter
will be permitted to vote as
long as the voter signs an af-
fidavit stating that the voter is
the same person on the list of
registered voters.
“If a voter does not have
proper identification, the
voter will still be permitted to
vote provisionally. The voter
will have (six) 6 days to present
proper identification to the
county voter registrar, or the
voter’s ballot will be rejected.”
Medina County Elections
official Patricia Barton said
quite a few county residents
have come into the office to
change their voter registra-
tion card to read the same as
the identification they plan to
use when voting.
She offered as an example
a woman who prefers to be
called Mary, but her legal
name is not Mary, and none
of her identification has the
name Mary on it. She advised
the woman against using the
name Mary on her voter reg-
istration card, empasizing
that her the registration must
match her identification.
“In Medina County, no one
will be denied the right to vote,”
stressed Barton. “They will ei-
ther vote by ballot, electronical-
ly or by provisional ballot, but
they will be allowed to vote.”
Monday, Oct. 7, is the voter
registration deadline for the
November 5 election.
Dr. A’LannTruelockhas been
named the lone finalist for the
Superintendent of the Hondo
Independent School District.
The HISD Board of Trustees
met Monday night, selecting
Dr. Truelock, who is currendy
the assistant superintendent
math the Johnson City ISD,
from the final two candidates.
At Johnson City, she is in
charge of curriculum and fi-
nance.
The HISD will now enter a
21-day waiting period before
tmstees can make the hiring
official.
“We’ll do a little more vetting
in the 21-day period, but we’re
very confident in our selec-
tion,” said Board President Mi-
chael Neuman. “The 21 days
started Tuesday. It will actually
be a little longer than that, until
our next regularly-scheduled
board meeting on Oct. 21.
“She’s excited, and we’re
excited,” said the board presi-
dent. “We’re looking at the
possibility of a Nov. 1 start date
- not sure if that will happen,
but we’re hopeful.”
He said that her plans in-
clude relocating her residence
to Hondo from her current
home in Bulverde.
The board president also
said that salary negotiations
have not yet taken place, but
will in the coming days.
According to her Linkedln
profile, Dr. Truelock has been
in her current role with the
JCISD since June 2007. Prior to
that, she was a principal within
the district.
She is a graduate of Dimmitt
High School and Texas A&M
University. She earned both
her masters and doctorate at
Texas A&M-Commerce.
She will succeed Interim Su-
perintendent Dr. Ann Dixon,
who joined the HISD in June,
following the resignation of
Superintendent Clay Rosen-
baum. He served as district
chief for six years.
The district began the search
process with 24 applications
received. The selection com-
mittee interviewed six candi-
dates during the second week
of September, and from there,
narrowed the field to its final
two choices.
