A win over Winn is a win
Owls outlast
weather, Mavs
in 2nd half

Eagle Pass -- The forecast of
100% chance of rain probably
kept many folks away. The long
drive to Eagle Pass probably
did its part as well.
But when the rain began at
the start of the second quarter-
not to let up until the game
ended-chasing both bands out
of the stands, Friday’s game got
eerily quiet as well.
Before what may have been
the smallest crowd ever to wit-
ness a Hondo football game,
two third-quarter touchdowns
provided the difference, as the
Owls knocked off 5A Eagle Pass
Winn, 21-7.
After the bands’ departures,
there might have been 250 fans

pour at 10,000-seat Cozel Foster

Hondo coach Jeff Rochat and
the staff will take. The Owls
broke a two-game skid, even
though they didn’t put up huge
numbers.
Now 2-2 on the year, Hondo
gets the coming week off to rest
some nagging injuries and get
back to work prior to the final
non-district game of the sea-
son at Somerset on Oct. 4.
Whether the small crowd, or
the weather had anything to do
with the team’s performance
at the start of the game, Coach
Rochat was much more satis-
fied with the second half effort.
“I thought we played the
first half without the same in-
tensity which we’ve seen in the
first three games,” he said. “We
challenged them at halftime to
go back out and play Hondo
Owl football.
“We played very strong de-
fensively in the second half,
and took control on offense.”
Winn was held to just 46
yards of total offense in the
second half, while the Owls put
the game away with scores on
back-to-back possessions in
the third quarter.
The teams went six-plays-
and-out on the game’s first
three possessions, beofre the
Owls took over at their own 41
late in the first quarter.
Faced with a 3rd-and-ll af-
ter a holding penalty, the Owls
converted when Carson Stoner
passed 18 yards to Jack Rochat.
A personal foul on the Mav-
ericks moved the ball to the
Winn 27. On 3rd-and-13, Hon-
do came up big again, when
Stoner passed to William Keil-
man for a 30-yard touchdown.
The extra point was wide right,
keeping the score at 6-0 with
1:12 left in the opening period.
A 37-yard run by Winn quar-
terback Juan Elizondo got the
ball to the Hondo 31. But Ston-
er broke up a third down pass
at the goalline, then Dominic
Cosgrove pressured the QB on
fourth down, and the hurried
pass fell incomplete.
A short punt into a stiff wind
gave the Mavericks good field
position at the Hondo 36. Chris
Aranda ran 27 yards to the 1 on
third down. One play later, De-
ion Alonso took it into the end-
zone. The PAT gave Winn a 7-6
lead with 7:46 left in the half.
Hondo got to midfield be-
fore punting to the Winn 7. A
53-yard run by David Garza got
the ball to the Owls’ 37. Facing
long yardage on third down,
Reed Graff sacked Elizondo
back at midfield forcing anoth-
er punt, one of 15 combined
punts by the two squads.
It was the second time in the
two-year series that the Owls
had trailed by a point at half-
time, only to blank the Maver-
icks after intermission.
The second half started with
three three-and-out series.
With Winn facing a 3rd-
and-9, Hondo created its first
break of the half. Jack Rochat
intercepted a pass up the side-
line, and #29 returned it 29
yards to the Winn 29.
On first down, a reverse pass
from Brian Dominguez to
Rochat went for 28 yards to the
1, setting up Jacob Brown’s dive
into the endzone a play later.
Stoner ran in the two-point
conversion to give Hondo a
14-7 lead with 5:49 left in the
third.
Winn picked up a first down
at the Hondo 49, but Santos Es-
parza dropped the QB for a loss
on a running play. Soon faced
with a 4th-and-13, the Maver-
icks’ punt into the stiff breeze
traveled only nine yards.
Starting at the Hondo 43-
yard line, Brown went around
left end for 37 yards and a first

The numerous cancellations
of football games last Friday,
because of lightning and rain,
has resulted in a newly-sched-
uled game being slated for
Hondo this Friday evening.
Last week, both Kenedy and
Junction had games canceled.
Kenedy was to have played
Woodsboro and Junction was
to have taken on Irion County.
While both of those teams had
games erased from the sched-
ule, both also had Sept. 27 open
dates on the schedule, as does
Hondo. They also had some fast
thinking on their side.
So, separated by about 200
miles, Kenedy and Junction,
both in Class 1A, Division I,
will be playing Friday night at
Barry Field in a 7:30 non-dis-
trict contest.

Owls sweep both ends
of home dual match
By Bobby Ainsley
Special to the Anvil Herald
After a rough week on the
road, the Hondo volleyball team
returned to the friendly confines
of the HHS Activities Center and
a dual match with Junction and
Poteet last Tuesday.
The Owls swept both match-
es, defeating Junction, 25-12,
25-22, 25-12, and following
that with a sweep of Poteet, 25-
12,25-9,25-14.
With the score tied at 4 in
the opening set, Hondo broke
Junction’s serve with a well-
executed offensive play which
included Kaelyn Ralph, Maddy
Ainsley and Reagan Luce.
Luce went on a service run
that creating the separation
Hondo needed to take con-
trol. She recorded an ace and
a kill and Kyrsten Gibson had
her first kill of the evening.
The teams traded sideouts,
sending Ralph to the service
line. Hondo went on a seven-
point run that included three
straight aces from Ralph and
kills from Ainsley, Gibson and
Ashley Poole. By the end of the
run, Hondo led by 10 points.
The Owls closed out the set
with Luce serving and Tammy
Ramirez recording three kills in
a row. Five Hondo players re-
corded kills and three had aces
in the first set.
At the other extreme, Hondo
recorded 12 unforced errors
in the second set. Part of it was
brought on by Junction’s being
more aggressive than in the first
set. Things remained close until
Jordan Oefinger started a service
mn that pushed the Hondo lead
to seven points. Hondo added
one more after a Junction tim-
eout. But the Eagles broke serve
and scored the next six points
in a row and closing the gap to
three. After an Eagle error, Ralph
recorded an ace and Hondo
again took control. The teams
traded points down the stretch
and closed out the set, 25-22. The
Owls again spread the offensive
wealth with six girls recording
kills and two adding aces.
The third set opened with
Hondo firmly in control of the
match. Junction took a quick
lead, but following a service
error, Hondo took control of
the set when Ainsley headed
to the line. The Owls reeled off
16 straight points. Ainsley had
seven aces in the run and Luce,
Poole and Oefinger all got into
the act with kills. With Hondo
firmly in control, 16-2, the Owls
put the ship on cmise control
and coasted to an easy victory,
ending the set and match with
an ace from Ally Bermea.
Hondo had a little down time
while Junction defeated Poteet
in three sets.
The Owls took on Poteet
in the third match of the day.
Hondo used the same stretegy
to take care of Poteet: strong
serving combined with good
passing and spreading the ball
to a variety of hitters.
Ainsley opened the first set at
the line and Hondo took a quick
6-0 lead. Oefinger, Luce and
Poole again led the attack for the
Owls. Through the middle of the
opening set, the teams traded
sideouts, but Hondo recorded
two or three points for every
one Poteet mustered. Oefinger,
Ralph, Gibson and Ainsley all
had aces in the set and Hondo
took advantage of several Poteet
errors to log the first set win.
A few Hondo miscues, com-
bined with a lot of dinking from
Poteet kept things interesting
early in the second set. Hondo
again shared the offense with
four Owls recording kills. But
when Hondo recorded a point
on a Luce to Ainsley to Ramirez
combo, Oefinger went to the
line and the Owls captured the
momentum for good. In the
run, the Owls pushed their lead
to nine points. After a couple of
sideouts, Gibson had her lon-
gest service mn of the season
and Hondo closed out the sec-
ond set going away, 25-9.
As the third set opened,
CoachRussellMcElroychanged
his rotation, with Oefinger
starting at the line. Three aces
in a row sent a message. Be-
sides Oefinger, Poole, Krisann
Bendele, Gari Zinsmeyer, and
Gibson all recorded aces in the
set. Hondo mixed up the of-
fense as well. Hannah Ytuarte,
usually relied on for her strong
passing abilities, recorded two
kills from the back row. Ben-
dele and Ramirez teamed for
a block and five different Owls
recorded kills. Hondo coast
to the easy 25-14 victory, and
sweep of the two matches.
With so many players in-
volved in other activities, the
volleyball team took Friday
off. They returned to action
on Tuesday when they hosted
Saint Mary’s Hall in their fi-
nal non-district match before
district play opens in Hondo
against Lytle on Sept. 27.
