with romp over SMH
By Jeff Berger
Anvil Herald Sports Editor
All the tuneups are done
for the 2013 Hondo volleyball
team. The Owls swept three
sets from an overmatched Saint
Mary’s Hall squad Tuesday in
the Activities Center, 25-15,
25-12, 25-7, in their final non-
district match of the season.
Everything starts for real on
Friday, when Hondo hosts Ly-
de in a District 29-AAA match,
starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Ac-
tivities Center. On Tuesday, the
HHS teams will travel to Crys-
tal City, for a 7 p.m. match.
The Owls led the opening
set 10-9, when Maddy Ains-
ley stepped to the line and led
Hondo on a six-point mn us-
ing a jump-serve. There were
two aces in the run and a kill
from Reagan Luce to give the
Owls a 16-9 lead.
At 20-15, a kill from Kyrsten
Gibson got the serve back to
Hondo, where Kaelyn Ralph
served out the set, with a Gib-
son kill, an ace, a block from
Ashley Poole and a monster kill
from Gibson to end it.
The second set stayed fairly
close until it was an 11-8 Owl
lead before Hondo pulled away
again. This time, Luce got the kill
for a sideout. With Krisann Ben-
dele serving, she recorded aback
row kill off a dig, an ace, and an
SMH error to make it 15-8.

8th Blue: A 10-yard Pearsall touchdown run on the final play of the first
half provided the difference as the Dogies took a 20-14 lead, and held
onto that margin the rest of the way against Hondo’s eighth grade Blue
team last Tuesday at Barry Field.
The Owls scored first, on a 46-yard pass from Isaiah Quintanilla to
Jacob Theis. Pearsall got the next two scores on runs of 29 and 11 yards
to take a 12-6 lead. Gilbert Flores broke loose for a 48-yard Hondo TD
run, than Josh Fernandez passed to Devon Andreozzi for the two-point
conversion. That put the Owls ahead 14-12 with 1:18 left in the half.
Hondo got some big tackles in the backfield from Andrew Ramirez,
Joseph Luna, Torin Nolan, Theis and Flores. Vincent Moreno had a stop
on a Pearsall two-point conversion attempt.
8th White: One touchdown for each team late in each half was all of
the scoring in a 6-6 tie between the Hondo eighth grade White team and
Pearsall, last Tuesday at Barry Field.
The Owls’ TD came on a 4th-and-goal pass from the 10-yard line, as
Dedrik Ytuarte found Grant Schultz open in the endzone with 22 seconds
remaining in the first half. The two-point try failed.
With 16 seconds left in the game, Pearsall scored on a one-yard run.
The Dogies went for two, but Hondo’s Jacob Essenburgh and CJ Correa
were there to stop the run short of the goallline.
Noah Benavides was a defensive standout for the Owls, along with
Ytuarte, Correa and Essenburgh.
7th Blue: The Hondo seventh grade Blue team scored on its second
offensive play from scrimmage last Tuesday against Pearsall, but that
was it, as the Dogies rallied for a 12-6 win over the Owls. The TD came
on a 50-yard run by Gabriel Frausto.
Pearsall scored twice in the second period, and neither team crossed
the goalline in the second half.
Joshua Flores had a solid game defensively for the Owls, and Marcus
Velasquez had a fumble recovery.
7th White: After spotting Pearsall a touchdown on the opening kickoff,
the Hondo seventh grade White team played solid ball the rest of the way,
coming back for a 16-8 win over the Dogies last Tuesday at Barry Field.
After Pearsall’s TD, the Owls drove the length of the field and got a
13-yard scoring run from Robert Martin, to cut the gap to 8-6 at the end
of one half. The Owls took the second half kickoff and drove it again,
with Martin scoring on a five-yard run. Jacob Rodriguez scored on the
two-point conversion. The TD was set up on a long pass from Joshua
Hernandez to Austin Dickens.
Late in the ball game, Hondo added a safety, when Martin and Jaren
Zavala teamed to sack Pearsall’s quarterback in the endzone. Also with
tackles for loss were Kendall Willman, Carlos Lewis, and Gabriel Flores.
Ryan Graff caused a Pearsall fumble.
Upcoming action: All of the Hondo junior high football teams will have
a break in the schedule until Thursday, Oct. 3. The seventh grade teams
will host Somerset, starting at 4:30 at Barry Field. They’ll be folllowed by
the junior varsity.
The eighth graders will go to Somerset, with games starting at 4:30.
The freshman game will be after the two eighth grade games.

down at the 20. Three plays
later, Brown scored from nine
yards away. Hunter Eitze add-
ed the PAT and Hondo led 21-7
with 1:08 left in the period.
Neither team threatened of-
fensively the rest of the night.
Hondo’s only big play in the
fourth quarter, a 25 -yard Keilman
run which would have converted
a 3rd-and-long, was wiped out
by offsetting penalties.
But the Owl defense stayed
active. Wesley Rogge brought
down Elizondo in the backfield
on a first down, which forced
the Mavericks to the air. They
were only 3-of-15 passing for
the night.
With about four minutes
left, the Mavericks reached the
Hondo 26, where they faced
a 2nd-and-5. Zane Groff got
a stop for no gain on second
down, then combined with
Jon Koch for a sack on third
down. On fourth down, Cos-
grove broke up a pass to end
the threat.
Hondo managed to kill two
minutes before punting. The

Junior Varsity
Thursday at Barry Field, the Hondo JV piled up 353 yards of offense,
while holding Eagle Pass Winn to just 95, in a 40-0 rout.
The JV (3-1) will have an open date on the schedule this week. They’ll
return to action next Thursday, Oct. 3, when they host Somerset at Barry
Field. Start time will be approximately 7 p.m.
Hondo scored on six of its seven possessions in the game. Aaron
Oefinger got the first and fifth touchdowns on runs of six and one yards.
The Owls put up three TDs in the second period, on a 19-yard pass
from Brandon Richter to Nathan Rodriguez, a four-yard run by Junior
Alfaro and a one-yard run from Rees Saathoff. Long passes from Richter
to Petey Pimentel and Javier Williams set up the Alfaro and Saathoff TDs.
Hondo’s final score came on a two-yard run by Robert Garcia. Jacob
Rangel connected on four of six extra point kicks.
Oefinger led the Owls with 112 yards rushing on 13 carries.
The Hondo defense turned in lots of big plays, including an interception
by Darius Vallez and a fumble recovery by Rylan Crisp. Other big tackles
for losses came from Vallez, Brad West, Javier Ortega, Ryan Martinez,
and Gabe Garcia. Rodriguez set the tone of the game with a big hit on
the opening kickoff, and Saathoff was in on numerous tackles.
Freshmen
Eagle Pass Winn’s freshman football team scored on its first three
possessions last Thursday at Barry Field on the way to a 24-7 win over
Hondo.
Today (Thursday), the freshman Owls will host Jourdanton in a game
added to the schedule to make up for future open dates against district
opponents who do not have a freshman squad. Today’s kickoff is at 6 p.m.
The freshmen are the only HISD football team with a game this week.
The Mavericks put together first half scoring drives of 73, 51 and 57
yards to take an 18-0 lead before intermission.
The Owls scored on their first possession of the second half, after
a tackle for loss by Matt DeLeon ending a Maverick possession at the
Hondo 40. The Owls needed eight plays to drive 60 yards for the score. A
pass from Ray Urrutia to Jonathan Carmona covered 26 yards on a 4th-
and-13 to keep the drive alive. Garrett Van Damme scoring on a 23-yard
keeper, then added the extra point.
Hondo’s second drive of the half moved from its own 43 to the Winn 9,
but the drive stalled on downs midway through the final period.
Winn then drove 91 yards in seven plays, capped by a 52-yard TD run.
DeLeon, Joel Luna and Chris Rodriguez all had stops behind the line
of scrimmage for the Hondo defense, and Connor Davis came up with a
fumble recovery.

Carson Stoner turns toward the endzone for a two-point conversion in Hondo’s rain-soaked
victory over Eagle Pass Winn.
Mavericks then tried four
passes, with all of them falling
incomplete.
From there, the Owls ran out
the clock.
“We played our style of foot-
ball in the second half,” said
Coch Rochat. “We had some
penalties that stopped some
drives, so we have to work on
that, but we had guys step up
on both sides of the ball.
“I have no complaints, what-
soever. We got a come-from
behind win on a long road trip,
in poor weather conditions.
Now we just need to get back
to work, heal some bumps and
bruises and get ready for our
last non-district game.”
